NEWS FROM MRS. NAETER
North Family and Friends:
November has shown up in a hurry and the theme of thankfulness is deeply embedded into this month. Everywhere you look there are “pumpkin spice is nice” statements and objects with the word “thankful” splashed across them. Ultimately, this month will lead us to a culminating celebration of Thanksgiving Day. It’s no coincidence that thankfulness and celebrations have been a big part of recent events at North Elementary too.
At North Elementary we are blessed with staff members that are thankful to teach and serve your children every day. Seeing the amount of learning and growth that is taking place in each and every one of our students deserves celebration. One of these celebratory efforts this past month has been establishing “Houses”. Houses are groups of twelve students from all grade levels (K-4) that meet with the same adult in the building twice a month. This is a special time for students to connect with one another and develop a support system that will last the entire time they are a student at North. So far during house time, we have talked about the characteristics of a good friend and we have decorated pumpkins together. We have celebrated and enjoyed each other’s company.
I challenge you as families to do the same – celebrate and enjoy each other’s company. Try to always lean towards what you are thankful for and not ruminate over what you have lost. Personally, I have experienced this perspective lately with my daughter losing everything she owned to an apartment fire. I am thankful for her health and I celebrate that she walked away unharmed. I hope that the month of November is truly a time of thankfulness and celebration for your family also.

Spotlight On First Grade
At North Elementary, reading is a priority in every grade level. In first grade, we use iReady lessons to reinforce reading objectives. Each student has a weekly iReady reading goal. First quarter, we set a grade-level goal with the incentive of a Johnny Appleseed day of learning. Students tracked scores of 80 and above. If students met their goal, they added their name to an apple. Once our tree was full of 22 apples, we earned the celebration!

Kindergarten - Students will begin Unit 2: Empathy. In this Unit we will learn about our feelings, identifying anger, accidents, caring/helping, and that people can have different feelings about the same situation. We will spend two weeks in November learning to name our feelings and how to figure out how others are feeling.
1st Grade/2nd Grade - We will be introducing the Green Spot "Peaceful/Calm" and the Red Spot "Anger/Frustration". Children do not experience outbursts because they WANT to. They do it because they lack the tools necessary to self-regulate. Finding your Peaceful Spot when a BIG EMOTION shows up, is critical in getting back on track and being ready to learn.
3rd Grade - Students will continue their lessons on Bully Prevention. This month we will learn about Refusing Bullying, Being Assertive, and Bystander Power.
4th Grade- Students will continue their lessons on Bully Prevention. This month we will learn about Bystander Responsibility and Bystanders to Cyberbullying.

Art Remarks
Hello North Families!
First quarter went by very quickly, it's hard to believe we are nearing the holidays! We have discussed several topics such as texture, color mixing, pointillism, tinting/shading and more! This quarter, we will be covering a lot of artists including Van Gogh, Georgia O'Keefe, Picasso and Monet. As December nears, I am hopeful that we will be able to design ornaments and holiday mementos using clay, watercolor paint, and more! I am enjoying each and every one of your young artists!
Artfully yours,
Miss Hopson
