Vision statement: At Haskin, we are "Learning Today, Shaping Tomorrow!"
Can you believe it is already March?!?! I am not sure where February went. It was certainly a busy month for the students and staff.
These days, students are tested often. Tests help to reveal important things such as:
- How much students are learning.
- How schools are performing.
- How groups of students (in districts, states, etc.) compare to each other.
During March and April, there will be some very important testing: the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) for 3rd graders. These tests assess the areas of English Language Arts/Literacy and Mathematics.
There are some things that can be done to help your child reduce test anxiety and increase success. The Parent Institute and other experts recommend that children should follow these guidelines before any testing situation:
- Don’t stay up late. Aside from studying, the next best preparation is a good night’s sleep before the test.
- Eat healthy meals. Make sure he/she eats a good breakfast. This provides energy at test time.
- Wear a favorite outfit. Your child should pick one that makes him/her feel comfortable. Make sure there are layers so, if it is too hot or too cold, he/she can take off a sweater or sweatshirt.
- Learn to relax. Some children find it helpful to close their eyes and take a few deep breaths before a test. Others like to imagine a peaceful place. It really does calm them down.
- Be positive. Expecting to do well helps children do well. Encourage your child to think positive thoughts!
- Face fears. It’s normal to be worried about tests. But if your child seems too anxious, ask about his/her fears. You may be able to reassure him/her. Let the teacher know, she can help, too.
The teachers have been working hard on preparing the students for the upcoming tests. They have worked on teaching good test taking skills. I hope the preparation at school, as well as these tips, can help set up a successful testing experience.

Thank you from St. Jude's!
Thank you to all of our families who helped make the St. Jude Mathathon a success. We collected donations of $1,995.00 for this worthwhile program. Haskin School has participated in St. Jude Mathathon since 1994 and since then, through the generosity of our families, we have raised almost $40,000.00. This year we raised $1,685.00!
Our Butter Braid fundraiser is underway. Money should be collected at the time orders are taken. Orders and money must be returned to school by March 7, 2017. Delivery will be March 22, 2017. Orders can be picked up or sent home with your student. The orders should not be left out for over three hours. For each $13.00 pastry sold, we receive $5.20 per loaf. This is a huge profit fundraiser that will go toward our One School/One Book activities. Thank you in advance for helping with this Haskin fundraiser!
Dental Exam Reminder
All K, 2nd and 6th grade students are required to have a completed dental exam form on file with the school by May 15, 2017. An exam from November 15, 2015 to the present will qualify. If financial difficulties are preventing you from getting the dental exam, complete the waiver form on the reverse side of the dental form and return it to your child’s school. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the School Nurse. All second and sixth grade students not providing a completed dental exam form by May 15, 2017 will have their final report card held.
National Poison Prevention Week is March 19-25, 2017
If you suspect a poisoning or if you have questions regarding poisoning, call your Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. When you call this number, you will reach a Poison Control Center covering your area. Poison Control Centers are staffed by specially trained nurses, pharmacists and physicians and are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The call is free and confidential. To learn more about how to help prevent poisonings, visit: poisonhelp.hrsa.gov. Almost 90% of the public who call a local Poison Control Center get the help they need over the telephone without having to go to a doctor or the hospital.
Poison Prevention Tips:
• Make sure all potential poisons are out of the sight and reach of children
• Keep medicines and household products in their original containers with original labels
• Always read labels before using medicines, cleaners, and other products
• Teach children to ask first before eating or drinking anything
• Never call medicine "candy" or make a game out of taking it
Mandated Sexual Abuse Training (Erin's Law) - March 16 & 17, 2017.
It is a frightening fact that only 1 in 10 sexually abused children will tell someone. Erin’s Law (named after childhood sexual assault survivor turned child advocate and activist Erin Merryn) was signed by Governor Quinn late January, 2013. This legislation requires all schools (Pre-K through 12th grade) to provide age-appropriate curriculum for kids on sexual abuse. Educating kids on safe touch, unsafe touch, safe secrets, unsafe secrets, how to get away and tell today. Sandwich CUSD #430 will be working with Safe Passage to help us cover this sensitive topic with our elementary children. The outcome is to teach students at an early age what to do and who to tell if they ever are in an abusive situation.

At the end of the two weeks, we will be going to Idle Hour Lanes in Sandwich to put all the skills and practice into a fun game. The cost will be $2 per student and the money will be due on Friday, March 10th. A letter will be sent home soon. Parents can sign up to be chaperones through the letter that will be sent home. Any questions, please contact Mr. Adeoti.
Haskin Winter Walking Club 2017
Sixteen Haskin students participated in the Winter Walking Club. For four weeks, students walked the hall of the school for one hour each week. The students totaled nearly 270,000 steps.
Haskin Library News
The Monarch Book of Illinois that received the most votes from the students at Haskin
School was "Princess in Black", written by Shannon and Dean Hale and illustrated by
LeUyen Pham. The students had to choose their favorite book out of 20 selections. The
voting took place in Haskin's Library. Mrs. Adrian, the school's librarian and Grandma
Buri, the school's guest reader read every book on the list to the students to give them
the best opportunity to pick their favorite book. Pictured is Mrs. Warner's first grade
students with Max Babbitt holding the winning book.
Kindergarten Update
On January 31st, Kindergarten students at Haskin celebrated their 100th Day of
Kindergarten! Students were asked to make a 100 Day project at home with 100
objects and bring those projects to school. After the children shared their wonderful
projects with their class, the projects were displayed in the front hallway for all to see.
Students also participated in a variety of 100 day activities in their classrooms such
as measuring with 100 cm of string, walking 100 steps in the hallway, predicting how
much 100 drops of water will fill a jar, timing themselves to see how long it will take to
do 100 hops, counting 100 pizza toppings, making structures with 100 cups, making
designs with 100 pattern blocks, writing 100 words together, and stamping 100 gumballs
on a gumball machine.
It was a fun filled day for all with lots of learning about the number 100!
1st Grade Update
Local FFA students visited the first grade classrooms this past week to present “More Than a Seed”. The students learned about the importance of agriculture in our community and around the world. They discussed the many different products made from corn and soy beans. Some were obvious, like cornflakes. Some weren’t so obvious, like a chocolate candy bar, gasoline, and diesel fuel! They shared photographs of farmers working in their fields and the different equipment they use and all the special jobs they do.
Each first grader then planted their own corn and soy bean seeds in a clear cup lined with a coffee filter. They placed the seeds between the cup and the filter so we will be able to see the roots develop and grow over the next few weeks. We will have some excited first grade farmers eager to see their “crops” grow!
2nd Grade Update
Second grade students at Haskin School are working very hard on their Young Author’ Books. Each class is doing a different style of book. Some students have been researching facts for a True or False book, while the others have been brainstorming ideas to put their own unique spin on the classic There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly story.
3rd Grade Update
Haskin third graders are writing their Young Author books. Each book is an ABC book about each student and a way to get to know each other a little better.
Colorful Hearts
Haskin third graders were visited by Mrs. Andrea Barker, “The Art in Science” teacher. The students learned about hearts, Valentine’s Day, colors and the work of Kandinsky, an abstract artist who used shapes to convey emotions. The students then created their own masterpieces by drawing colorful hearts with multi-colored backgrounds.
