Message from Mrs. Sullivan
Happy New Year! I hope all of you have enjoyed the holiday season and time with your families. All three of our children are home from college for winter break. Our oldest daughter leaves Tuesday to study abroad at Notre Dame's London campus. Very excited for her, but will miss her dearly. Our freshman twin kids will be home for a few more weeks. It is an adjustment having college kids back in the house :)
I am very excited to begin 2020 welcoming back the students and staff! This will be a busy month of new learning, various assessments, and conference week. Please do not hesitate to reach out with questions or ideas. I am looking to schedule a January "Chat with Cheryl." Feel free to email me (csullivan@op97.org) with suggestions on how to increase attendance.
One way to work on math skills and prepare for the MAP testing (2nd - 5th grade) is to use Khan Academy. Log in here and either use your child's recent RIT score or reach out to me for the specific data points.
New Year's Resolution for Mann Community - Getting to school on time
It is that time of year when many of us will make New Year's Resolutions. I am asking that together as a Mann Community we make a resolution (one that will be kept) to help get our students here on time. Students should be lined up with their class in the morning when the bell rings at 7:57. By the second bell, at 8:00 students should be walking in with their homeroom teachers. We have too many students coming late. We have been giving tardy passes to students who come in at 8:05 or after but we will now be consistently giving them out starting just after 8:00 if they come in without their class.
Helping Kids get to School Daily and on Time
I subscribe to "Attendance Works." See some tips below.
Attending school has a huge impact on student success.
Some Attendance Tips to Promote Student Learning:
- Make sure your students keep a regular bedtime and establish a morning routine so they are rested and alert when they get to school.
- Turn off all electronics including TVs, phones and tablets at bedtime.
- Make sure clothes and backpacks are ready the night before.
- Check with our school nurse or office staff if you are not sure about when to keep your child at home due to illness.
- Avoid scheduling vacations or doctor’s appointments when school is in session.
- Talk to teachers and counselors for advice if your student feel anxious about going to school.
- Develop back up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, neighbor, or another parent to take your student to school.
.
- Students may be dropped off at the front door at 7:30 (no earlier) for breakfast. There is a supervisor in the cafeteria from 7:30 - 7:45 while students have breakfast before heading outside where there is additional supervision.
- Please let us know how we can best support you and your children so that they can show up for school on time every day

Special day for us to all celebrate -see how you can prepare
In early January, we want to celebrate an important moment in one of our very own Mustang's lives. Reese, a 3rd grader, has been undergoing chemotherapy and other treatments over the last year and a half, and his last treatment is on January 2nd!!! In honor of this, we wanted to celebrate with him by wearing the colors of the rainbow on the day that he returns back to school after his last treatment because he LOVES rainbows! On this day, kindergarten will wear RED, 1st grade will wear ORANGE, 2nd grade will wear YELLOW, 3rd grade will wear GREEN, 4th grade will wear BLUE, and 5th grade will wear PURPLE. We will have a rainbow parade for Reese when he walks in the building. Please start thinking of the perfect shirt to wear on this day! We will let you know the exact date as soon as possible!!
Support Team Reese
Show your support for Reese and his family. A new fundraising goal of $75,000 will provide the best possible care for our third grade Mustang. 100% of the funds are designated for the costs of Reese’s therapies and long term recovery.
