A Note from Mrs. Mathe

This week has been a bittersweet week here at Powell Elementary with the passing of General Colin Powell, our school's namesake. I was honored to receive a letter from General Powell in August this school year. He showed great interest in our school, the first school named after him. He was dedicated to quality education of all Americans. He was a true American hero. On Veteran's Day this year, we will do a special tribute in memory of General Powell for all he has done for our country.

One of my favorite Colin Powell quotes, which was a part of the speech I gave when I accepted the position of Principal here at Powell is, "A dream does not become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work."

Below is a copy of the letter I received.

Important Storybook Parade Information

We are so excited to be able to hold our Storybook Parade outside again this year! Our students and staff will parade around the entire building 1 time. There are viewing areas in the front and back of the school building.

If you plan to check your child out after the parade, please note the following procedures:

  • Let your child's teacher know by email prior to the parade
  • Once the entire parade has passed around the entire school, we will begin to let parents in to check out their children. (please note, you may have to wait a little bit after the last child passes)
  • Once all students are back in their classrooms, we will open the side and front doors (like we did for Meet the Teacher) to allow you into the hallway to check out your child(ren).
  • There will be a desk at every teacher's door way. Please be prepared to show your ID to your child's teacher.
  • Your child's teacher will give them a sticker to wear so the staff members at the exits know that they have been properly checked out.
  • If you plan to have someone, not on the emergency pickup list, check out your child, please email contactpowell@conroeisd.net with a copy of your photo ID so we can be prepared.

Save the date! The Fall Book Fair is coming!

Did you know that reading 20 minutes a day with your children is the best investment your family can make in their future? Research shows that children who read just 20 minutes per day score in the 90th percentile on standardized tests. Come to the Book Fair to stock up on the books your child will love reading and ignite your home reading habits.

Veteran's Day Performance

This year, in honor of Veteran's Day, we are working on a virtual celebration to honor those that serve our country. We will honor General Colin Powell with a special tribute during this event. We would also like to honor the family members of our Powell Panthers that have served our country in the Armed Forces. Below is a link to a Google Form. If you would like us to include your loved one in our virtual celebration, please complete the form, including a photograph. We would love to be able to tell them "Thank you"!

Substitutes Needed

We would love our Powell parents to serve as substitutes at Powell Elementary. Many of our Powell parents love to serve in this role, and we, as a staff, love to have our parents at our school. If you would like to apply to be a substitute in CISD, you can apply here. In case you weren’t aware, you can register at specific schools. For example, if you have a little one at Powell, one at Mitchell and one at McCullough, you can sign up to sub at just those three schools. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about serving in this capacity. I hope to see you on our substitute list very soon!

Referral Requests for Gifted and Talented Testing

Referral requests are now open for Conroe Independent School District Gifted and Talented program. Although the testing will not take place until late January, referral requests are accepted at this time. Referral requests can be made by the parents and/or campus staff.

It is recommended that parents of 2nd grade students wait until CogAT scores have arrived before nominating their child because CogAT scores are part of the GT assessment. This assessment will be administered to all 2nd grade students this month.

If you are interested in referring your child, you may want to discuss this with your child’s teacher at conferences. Referrals will be accepted through December 17, 2021. You may request a referral form from Mrs. Nixon. You can also find the referral form and other GT information on the CISD GT homepage.
