Midland Messenger

September 8-11, 2020

Dear Parents and Families,

Welcome to the 2020-21 School Year! Our Midland Staff have been working hard in preparation for an excellent school year! Although we are starting school virtually, we are still committed to a great year of learning for your students.

Our school is committed to our motto: Achieving Success, Inspiring Hope, Celebrating Community. We will achieve this through explicit teaching of school-wide expectations, differentiated instruction in the classroom, use of data to inform our instruction, and a safe and positive school culture. Your students are the inspiration for our work and we are looking forward to partnering with you to help your student to achieve success at Midland.

This year we have added some new staff. Please help me welcome:

Mr. Nuñez (Assistant Principal), Mrs. Sims (Kindergarten), Mrs. Christian (1st Grade), Mrs. Weimer (5th Grade), Ms. Pratt (Speech Therapist), Ms. Crabtree (PT), Ms. Navarro (Ell Para), and Mrs. Thomas (Nurse).

I welcome your communication. Please call or email me to share your celebrations or concerns at (253)298-4501 or paula.dawson@fpschools.org

It's great to be a MUSTANG!

How Do You Get Your Child Started?

The first day of school is Tuesday at 8:30 for students in Grades 1-5! Does your child have their laptop charged and ready? This week, teachers will see the whole class from 8:30-11:00. Next week, students will "attend" during their assigned cohort time.

Students should log-on at 8:25 to be sure they are ready to start with their teacher at 8:30. Their student ID number is the username and their birth date (mmddyyyy) is their password. The documents attached below will take you step by step! Below is a short video to show you, as well.

If you try to get into the Canvas course this weekend, it's possible that the link is not yet active or that you do not see the conference link yet. Teachers will have everything published on Tuesday morning.

You are encouraged to call our school office 253-298-4500 on Tuesday morning if you are having technical issues. Our office staff will take your name and phone number, and we will have someone call you back to help you.

Although this is a different kind of "First Day of School," we encourage you to celebrate, take pictures, and create the same routines you do for a regular school year.

Pictures, please!

We would love to see (and maybe share) your first day pictures! Please send photos of your children logging onto their computer, showing their work station, or wearing their Midland t-shirt! We hope to share these with staff and others, so please only send if you are okay with them being posted on Facebook and in our next communications with families!

Send your photos to paula.dawson@fpschools.org.

Kindergarten Families

Welcome to Midland! This is a different kind of start for our Kindergarten students, but it is still a special time for families.

Our Kindergarten team is looking forward to meeting with each family for 50 minutes this week, to learn about your child and to share information with you about our learning plan. If you have not yet made an appointment for your conference, please go to midland.fpschools.org and find the tab in the banner to schedule your conference.

We look forward to starting school with your child on Friday!

Social Emotional Learning Corner by Mrs. Blaisdell

Welcome Midland Families, to a bright and shiny new school year! Although none of us hoped or planned for a start such as this year’s start; rest assured that our staff is working so hard to make this a supported, productive and worthwhile year for our students and families. Social Emotional Learning (SEL) has always been an important part of the education provided by Midland’s staff. This year, SEL will be especially vital for our students, families, and staff. Strong social emotional skills will help us all to get through these trying times and move forward with hope and a solid foundation of skills based on belonging to a learning community that supports, includes, and nurtures our learners, families, and staff.

I am so excited for the opportunity to bring SEL to all students and families this year. My name is Anita Blaisdell and this is my 34th year of teaching and my 31st year in our awesome Franklin Pierce Schools. I have been a special education teacher, a primary teacher and now as SEL specialist for all Midland Mustangs. I have two children who attended FP schools. My daughter graduated from FPHS and UW. My son is currently a senior at FPHS. I am a Franklin Pierce parent, just like you. 😊 I care about our entire community and its scholars and families.

What can you expect this year?—Your child will have a “live” teaching session in the Skills for Success course in Canvas every week with their classmates. I will be putting assignments (video lessons, etc.) in their Canvas course for them to access throughout the week. I will be available daily to have personal or small group conferences with students and families if requested. I will post weekly in the Midland Messenger with notes about the skills and topics we are working on in class across the grade levels; and I will try to give information that can help us all to manage this journey with hope and joy. I am here for Midland scholars, their families, and our amazing staff. Together, our learning community to rise above our current situation and continue to grow and learn.

If you need to contact me, your child can use Canvas inbox or everyone can email me at ablaisdell@fspchools.org and my school number is 1-208-609-4508

Our journey begins hopefully. 😊

Conferences for Grades 1-5

This week our Grades 1-5 teachers will hold in-person and/or virtual conferences with their families, to learn more about your child and to share their instructional plan. The will also spend time on how to use the computer for learning and you will receive your child's supply bag! If your teacher is meeting with you virtually, you can call the office to pick up the supply bag at a time that works for you. (253-298-4500)

If you have not yet made your conference appointment, please go to our website, midland.fpschools.org and find the link in the banner at the top. Be sure to select your child's teacher name to schedule correctly.

Due to COVID restrictions, if you are coming to the building, please limit the number of people coming to the student and a parent. You will be checked in at the door and then sent directly to the classroom. It is IMPORTANT that your child brings their laptop to the conference.
