STAAR Testing Dates for this school year are below
STAAR Testing Important Reminders
● Please avoid scheduling appointments these days so that your child will be on campus to allow for testing. The state allows for a four hour testing window for the STAAR test, with the exception for students with accommodations that allow extra time set in place through their 504 or ARD.
● Collins strives to begin testing by 9:30 at the latest, taking a break for testers to eat lunch and resume the testing window.
What if your child does not take the STAAR test or does not pass the STAAR test?
The state of Texas has implemented House Bill 4545 for the 2021-2022 school year and plans on having this bill moving forward to support student learning. Please see below from Texas Education Agency for the 2022-2023 school year with regards to STAAR Scores:
What does the above information mean for your child?
CLICK HERE if you would like to read more information regarding the House Bill 4545 information from the Texas Education Agency.
Collins Counselor Updates:
Are you interested in learning more about how to navigate technology with your children? There will be a presentation about “parenting with tech” on April 13th at 6:30 PM. The presentation is recommended for parents, but students are also welcome to attend with their parents (the recommended age is 5th grade and above). Please see the below flyer for more information!
Nurse Kendall Update:
Dear Parent or Guardian,
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) requires schools to provide instruction on human growth and development in the 5th and 6th grades. CISD utilizes the P&G School Programs “Always Changing” video series to provide age appropriate information regarding the changes occurring in the growth and development of this age group. This year, the videos are offered virtually for viewing at home. Please view the video with your child at your convenience. If your child has any questions for me, have them come see me in the clinic at school. Please see the links below:
Always Changing and Growing Up- Boys Puberty Education
Always Changing Puberty Education Program Girls
6th grade students are required to have the Tdap and Meningitis (MCV4) vaccines for 7th grade. If your child has received these vaccines, please send a copy of the immunization record to the clinic. If not, please make arrangements to have these vaccines administered ASAP.
Library Update
We are excited to announce that author Dan Gemeinhart will be visiting Collins on March 30. If you’d like to purchase one of his books, he’d be happy to sign it for you. Due to shipping issues, you are invited to purchase any of his titles at the store of your choice (Village Books (local independent bookstore), Barnes and Noble, Target, Amazon, etc). Then your student can drop it off in the library the Monday or Tuesday (March 28 or 29) before the visit. Include a piece of paper with your student's first and last name and their homeroom teacher inside the book's front cover so that it is returned to the correct student. Books will not be for sale on the day of his visit; students wanting a signed book will need to buy one ahead of time and bring it to school. Students are not required to purchase a book to see the speaker. This is only if they want a signed copy.
Here are Dan’s titles:
The Honest Truth: An adventure about a boy battling cancer, who runs away with his dog to climb Mt. Rainier.
Some Kind of Courage: A western adventure about an orphaned pioneer boy who goes on an epic frontier journey across Washington state to get his beloved horse back.
Scar Island: A boy who commits a terrible crime is sent to a grim island reform school prison - but when disaster strikes, he and other inmates find themselves in a struggle for survival.
Good Dog: A loyal dog who has passed away returns to earth as a spirit in order to save the boy that he loves more than anything.
The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise: A grieving girl and her father go on an epic cross-country journey to save a memory box that she made with her tragically lost mother and sisters.
Spring Break is a great time to look around the house for lost library books. Students are expected to pay for any items they lose or damage. You can check your child’s library account by going to the Destiny app on the SSO. It will show all books currently checked out or lost.
Students who wish to participate in the March Madness Library Bingo challenge can find the board on the library canvas page. Just print it off, track your titles, and turn it in at the end of the month.
Art Update
We hope everyone has a fun and relaxing Spring Break! Students in Mr. Hunt’s class are continuing to work on their realistic drawing skills using the technique of artist Chuck Close. Students in Mrs. Ferguson's class are going to be learning about the proportions of the face and how to draw a realistic self-portrait in graphite.
