Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 27th January 2017
grow your own
year 3 leek and potato soup
Our Year 3 pupils are responsible for looking after the school vegetable garden and they do a great job! This week they dug up the leeks planted by the present Year 4 children back in May. Together with school grown potatoes and some milk, they then cooked up a delicious leek and potato soup. It was great to see children eating soup they'd made themselves from fresh ingredients grown on the school grounds (and we enjoyed our taster too!).
We are so fortunate to be able to enjoy activities like this in our varied curriculum, but as with many of our exciting projects, we couldn't manage without our volunteers. Mrs Williams comes in faithfully every week to teach the children about gardening and cooking, and we'd like to take this opportunity to say a massive THANK YOU from us all.
HACKFALL WOODS
enjoying a frosty, foggy morning
Reception pupils visit Hackfall Woods four times throughout the year, so they can experience every season and see the seasonal changes brought to the woods. They had perfect weather for their winter experience on Wednesday. There is no such thing as bad weather if you're wearing the right clothing and although it was a little wintry, we were very proud of the children who didn't moan about the cold once.
year 3 visit a hindu temple
It was great to have time to pop in at Bombay Stores on the way home, which was an amazing shop filled with everything Hindu, Hindu wedding and everyday clothes, shoes, jewels etc. Thank you to all our parent helpers for coming along on the trip.
welcome worship
It was lovely to see so many parents, carers and younger siblings at both events. Children always enjoy seeing their family in school and being able to show them what they've been up to, so we'd like to remind you of these dates for further opportunities to come to worship with the children just after drop off time:
Thursday 2nd February - Year 1
Thursday 9th March - Year 6
Thursday 16th March - Year 5
Thursday 23rd March - Year 4

Sign2Sing
We are looking forward to taking part in 'Sign2Sing' in a couple of weeks - this is an annual event organised by the deaf health charity Sign Health, which raises essential funds to help vulnerable deaf children and adults. The children have been enjoying learning some songs using sign language, and on Tuesday 7th February we will be having a deaf awareness day, which will end with a short concert for friends and family in the school hall, at 2:50pm. Please do come along to see the children perform - no tickets will be required, but as you arrive we will ask for a donation towards the work of the charity. If you'd like to find out a bit more about the charity, please follow this link www.sign2sing.org.uk
parent information opportunities
Friday 10th February - school is closed for pupils so that we can have another successful day of parent-teacher appointments. All teachers are also offering some after school appointments on other days if you cannot make the Friday. Please book online following the instructions sent home this week. You can click here to access the booking website.
Thursday 2nd March - to coincide with World Book Day, Mrs McCormick will be running an English workshop which will feature a chance to go into classes. This will be during the day so, as well as learning more to support your child's learning, you will also get the opportunity to experience all those World Book Day costumes!
Thursday 9th March - Miss Hardy will run a Mathematics workshop - details to follow.
weekly reading raffle
This week, Year 6 have only just managed to hold on to the winners spot again, with 88% of children reading 5 or more times (as noted in their reading record and signed by a parent or carer). Congratulations to Years 4 and 5 with another increase from the previous week. Year 6, are you really going to let Year 5 beat you, they're only 1% away? It is great to see so many of our children reading every day as it develops their reading confidence. We would love to see more of the younger children reading with a parent or carer too. We are sure you will love sharing a book for 5 or 10 minutes. Which class will be the first to 100%?

Breakfast Natters
We are delighted that so many of you are now joining us for Breakfast Natters. Our next gathering is on Thursday next week, February 2nd. Come to the Cathedral Hall after the school drop and share coffee/tea, yummy pastries and drinks and snacks for little ones. Elizabeth, one of our governors, will meet you on the playground and walk with you if you are unsure of where to find us. We have lots of toys to keep the children happy while you enjoy a chat with other parents and friends. A warm welcome awaits you!
Christingle Service
We are having a Christingle service in the Cathedral on Saturday, February 11th at 3.30pm. This is part of our Candlemas celebration which marks the end of the Christmas season in church.
