Mrs. Loppnow's News & Notes
Week of October 8, 2018
What a fun week! It started with Project Go and ended with popsicles for Reading! Thank you to those of you who donated treats for our volunteers, they were very appreciative. It was SO much fun to meet all of the amazing grandparents. I especially enjoyed listening to the conversations about what school was like back in the "Olden Days"! There aren't as many stories about one room school houses and, the grandparents seem to get younger and younger every year! Why is that?
I hope you all enjoy your long weekend and find time to relax and enjoy the sun that is finally shining! Because it is a short week I will not be sending a News & Notes update. In the meantime, please feel free to contact me, at any time, with questions or concerns.
Have a great weekend!

Popsicles for READING!!!
A Peek into this Week and Next!
Math: This week we focused on addition and subtraction. I have to be honest, the kids are struggling a bit! Continued practice, at home, would be beneficial. See below for some tips on "regrouping" using the standard algorithm. We will continue to practice new strategies and will make connections to fact families and our upcoming unit on multiplication and division.
Social Studies: The students studied LANDFORMS this week in preparation of our Island Map project beginning next week. You can find details below, but, please don't stress over it! We will spend time next week talking about the project and completing the beginning stages BEFORE bringing it home to complete. This should be a FUN project, but also one where the students apply everything they have learned during this unit.
Reader's Workshop: So, can a thief be HONEST? We had a great conversation about just that after reading the folktale, Ooka and the Honest Thief. I hosted our first "fishbowl" activity where students had the opportunity to debate the topic, agree or disagree with their peers. or just listen and see how their opinions changed by listening to others. We discussed the lesson, "Honesty is the best policy" and identified other stories in which we are taught a lesson or moral. Next week we will read several fables and will practice inferring the meaning by using evidence from the text. See above for our "Fish Bowl" activity. Thank you to Jayden, Brixton, Amelia, Kennedy, Olivia for being BRAVE to be our first participants.
