From the Nest...
Many of you may already be thinking ahead to next year anticipating your child’s teacher placement. Grouping students in classrooms is an extensive and lengthy process involving many key professionals in our building. There are many considerations and factors (appropriate instructional levels, class size, and boy/girl ratios) used throughout this process. We will be making placement decisions that are in the best interest of all students.
In the past, administration received requests from parents asking that their child(ren) be placed with a specific teacher. This year we will be moving away from requests that name a specific teacher. Instead, we’d like to give you the option to use the linked form to share the learning style of your child, along with characteristics of a teacher that you feel make a good match. We will consider your input, if provided, as we make those final decisions regarding placements. If you have a personal conflict with a specific teacher, please call the office to schedule an appointment with Mrs. Feldman to discuss this and how it could affect your child’s learning.
Additionally, in the past several years due to the pandemic, siblings have been placed together in the same class. Next year we will return to the best practice of separating siblings. If this is something that you’d like to discuss, please call the office to schedule an appointment with Mrs. Feldman.
We are confident that with our grouping process, we are able to make appropriate placement decisions. We ask that you put your trust in us in making the best choice for all of our students.
If you know your child will not be attending Yellow Springs next year, please reach out to our Front Office staff so we have that information as we are working on grouping students.
Just a reminder that our office will be closed to the public starting tomorrow, Friday 4/15 through Sunday 4/24 for Spring Break. We look forward to assisting you when we return on the 25th!
As always, we thank you for your continued support and partnership in our educational program.
Warm regards,
Mrs. Hannah Feldman and Dr. Kathy Swire

Pre-K Registration
Applying for FCPS public prekindergarten program, regardless of the time of year, DOES NOT automatically guarantee enrollment. Every attempt is made to provide space for as many children as possible, but because of funding restrictions, spaces are limited. In order for your application to be considered, all appropriate information must be completed and accompanied by ALL required documentation. Incomplete applications will not be processed and may affect your child’s placement.
The FCPS Pre-Kindergarten program is a state-funded program for four-year olds who meet the following eligibility requirements:
Child must be four years old on or before September 1st of the current school year
Child must reside in Frederick County
Children whose families qualify up to 300% of the Federal Poverty Limit (new)
Please see this link for more information regarding Pre-K registration
Testing Season
There are three series of testing that we will be administering per FCPS and MSDE requirements: Maryland Integrated Science Assessment (MISA), Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT), and Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP).
The MCAP schedule is below. It is important that your child gets a good night’s sleep, has a quality breakfast, and arrives on time on their days of testing. We ask that if at all possible students are present for the entire time frame on the days of testing.

- Wednesday 4/27 & Thursday 4/28 - Afternoons - Math Assessment

MSDE Special Education Survey
Your Child’s Sick? Here’s What to Do!
Please keep your child home if they are ill and email yses.attendance@fcps.org to let the school know that your child is unwell. We ask that you keep your child home for 24 hours after the symptom(s) and, if needed, get them tested for COVID-19.
We thank you for your cooperation in keeping all our students healthy and present for instruction!
Volunteering in School
We are welcoming volunteers this year! In order to volunteer, you must complete the online Volunteer Training. If you plan to come into the building for any event, please make sure you have completed this training well in advance so that you can be processed in our system. Due to our COVID-19 protocols, visitors to the school are not permitted this year.
Mrs. Hanlon's Counseling Corner
Thank you parents of 5th grade K helpers, mentors, safety patrol, AM announcers, flag raisers and ambassadors! Your children have collectively put in time before, during and/or after school to contribute to our school community in so many ways. Thank you for allowing them to share their time and talents with us! It is truly a privilege to get to know each one and to see them so willing and so adept at giving of themselves to others. Parents of 4th graders: be on the lookout for next year's leadership and serving opportunities in the coming weeks!
Thank you to Brook Hill Church, Yellow Springs Lions Club and St. Katherines for providing the food for the “power packs” that go home on Fridays to many of our families.
Thank you also to each family who has sent us goodies from the Eagle’s Perch wish list! Your generosity is appreciated by all and has contributed to what has turned out to be a very successful positive behavioral support incentive! Students will be making their last purchases from the store in May.
