Lakeshore Library Learners
August/September Parent Edition
The Library is Open
We are still practicing safety in the library by doing virtual checkout with students in grades 2 - 5 and the visiting "Book Bus" in Kindergarten and first grade. We are doing this to help maintain the safety and cleanliness of the library inventory. Our library has 10,900 books on the shelves available to students and we want to make sure that they are nice and clean for our children.
If your child has not yet utilized the Destiny Library Search hold feature to request books, please have them watch the video below, then I can pull the book(s) (2 at a time for 2nd - 5th), check them out, and deliver them to the classroom teacher's mailbox outside of their door.
I will continue to visit Kindergarten and 1st grade classrooms every other week with the Book Bus to allow them to check out. Kindergarten students are allowed to check out 1 book at a time, since they are learning how to take care of and be responsible with their book. First graders are checking out 2 books at a time. The process works as follows:
- Teachers have a "Bookhub Menu" to allow students to choose up to 3 different topics as a class. I use these topics as a guide to pull Kindergarten and first grade friendly books from the shelf to load on the Book Bus. Not every book is on a K-1 reading level, we just don't have the number of titles for that, yet (more to come on that topic). However, I am trying to get as close as possible for them. I carry between 20-25 books on the Book Bus
- Teachers sign up for a time for me to visit their classroom. I park the Book Bus in the hallway where students come out 1 at a time to choose a book.
- Students sanitize their hands and then they walk around the cart to look at all of the books. If they want a closer look inside the book, I pull it off of the cart and we picture walk through it until they make a decision.
- Once the students have made their decision I check the book(s) out in our library system there in the hallway.
Returning Books
I have daily bins just inside the library door for daily drop off. The container will be stored with the books inside for 6 days (according to the latest REALM study) and then I will check the books in, wipe them down, and return them to the shelf.
The books do not need to be returned in the bags they were delivered in, those are just for organization. They will need to breathe in the return container.
The Fall Book Fair is Coming
- Computer Programs
- Commerce, Communication, Transportation
- Astronomy and Allied Science
- Geography
I would love to be able to order newer editions of books in these areas that cover all reading levels. As well as replace any lost books, or books that are in poor condition on the shelf.
