Wishing You a Safe and Inspired Holiday!

Thank You!

Because of the July 1st student roll-over, this communication is the last for a great many families whose last child leaves Salford Hills to move on to Indian Valley. As I've mentioned often, most of these folks have been with us for quite awhile - 5, 10, 15, 20 years. To these cherished families, know that Salford Hills shines just a little bit brighter because of you. Thoughtfully, we will think back on our time together and smile.

Best of luck as you encourage and equip your children to be purpose-driven learners and kind souls in a new school.

Respectfully,

The Faculty and Staff of Salford Hills Elementary School

Oh, no! Not Another Survey!

Wednesday Message Feedback Survey - Please Help!

Maybe summertime isn’t the best time to ask for feedback, but I use these months as a chance to reflect and look ahead. In doing so, I’d like your feedback on The Wednesday Message. At its core, the vision for this weekly parent communication tool is to keep the SH family informed about future events, celebrate successes, educate, and foster community. I’d like to know a little more about how you think that’s going. More importantly, what would make it better.

Would you consider taking a few moments to share some thoughts? We’re always looking to become better at Salford Hills. It’s part of our growth mindset. Your voice is important to us.

Thanks in advance for your role in producing a better product every week.

Dr. Purnell

Forget Something? Last Chance for Clothing

We've got a few items on the front office desk and more than a few coats, hats, and gloves at the Lost and Found wall in the cafeteria. If you have any of these items, please visit us! Know that we'll be packaging up clothing July 1 and donating to the Mitzvah Circle.

REPOST: But Just As Good!

Summer School Begins! Really?

At our Participation Assembly, I challenged 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders to do something "schoolish" every day over the summer --- and that didn't include lunch and recess! What's the best gift you can give your child this summer, one that will have far-reaching effects through all next year? Schedule academic time daily during the summer. Traditionally, school schedules were built on an agrarian society where children helped to tend crops and harvest during the summer and early fall. While our economic structure has changed, our schedule hasn't which admittedly many of us prefer. Summers have become part of our culture and an opportunity to enjoy family and friends. However, the fact remains that summer is a difficult time to retain previous gains -- unless you work at it!

So... build in time during your child's day to maintain if not accelerate growth. Dropping the books and pencils in favor of sneakers and flipflops is a mindset. I maintain that it's not one or the other, but children can enjoy both... and should. But it doesn't happen without guidance and structure on the part of parents and care givers. Consider the following to help your child grow this summer:

  1. Continue to practice on First in Math through July 31st with your current login information. Finish the VIFs! Build your fact fluency!
  2. Keep READING every day! Log your minutes in the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. Will you be a Reading Wizard?
  3. Keep WRITING. Write in a journal, send postcards to Dr. Purnell, or write to one of your previous teachers!
  4. Keep LEARNING, keep WONDERING, keep EXPLORING, keep GROWING YOUR MIND... there is so much to discover!

Start today. Build into the day 30 to 60 minutes (or more!) of academic time to keep skills fresh throughout the season and reap the benefits as we enjoy a new school year in just a few short months. While it may be rough surfing in the beginning, it'll be smooth sailing when your child is in the groove and having fun.

Thanks in advance for coming together as partners in learning for all our children.

Respectfully,

Dr. Purnell
