The Lumberjack Edge
Cedar Mill Elementary School
January 19, 2018
It's hard to believe we are already on the tail end of January of 2018! With the new year, our Cedar Mill Community continues to grow. This January alone, 9 new students have enrolled in all grades and from all over the world, bringing our total enrollment up to 430! A warm welcome to all of our new students and families.
This morning, Cedar Mill Kindergarteners shared their learning about responsibility with the rest of the school as we continue our focus for this month's character development trait. Thank you to the students and teachers for sharing!
Today is also the last day for students to submit recording sheets for the Winter Reading Challenge in partnership with the Cedar Mill Community Library. Recording sheets with the hours of reading by students have been streaming in over the last few weeks. School totals will be announced next week and submitted for Cedar Mill's contribution towards the purchase of a pair of goats to a family in need. Thank you to all who participated and keep on reading!

Elementary Report Cards
Beginning with this current school year, elementary schools moved from a trimester progress reporting calendar to a semester reporting calendar. This is consistent with middle schools and high schools. All levels will report student progress to parents four times per year. For elementary schools, this will be during spring and fall conferences and at the end of each semester: February and June. Paper copies of report cards come home on Friday, February 9th. If you prefer an electronic version, parents may select this option through their ParentVue account(s).
Makerspace Donations Needed
The definitions of “makerspace” are many and varied, but at Cedar Mill we are aiming for a space that provides opportunities for exploration in technology (coding, robotics, engineering) and art (design process & creation). We are excited about this project and have some fun tech “toys” for our makerspace.
We are in need of donations of arts and crafts supplies and recycled materials for the Cedar Mill MakerSpace. We’ll take almost anything students can use to make and create; here’s a list of suggestions to get the ball rolling. Even small amounts of any material will be very much appreciated!

2018-19 School Calendar
Please note the 2018-19 school year begins on August 27, 2018. In the spring of 2016, the Beaverton School District set a plan to add 9 student contact days over the course of three school years. This allows students to attend more full weeks of school and improves overall continuity for learning.

Annual Lice Information
Head lice is a common and often frustrating condition. It is not associated with a lack of cleanliness. Head lice don't care if your hair is clean or dirty. They don't care if you are young or old, rich or poor. Head lice are looking for a warm place to live and eat and any head with hair would be a great home. Head lice are very small gray or tan insects. They do not jump or fly. These insects lay eggs (nits), which attach to the hair shaft, close to the scalp. Nits are small, about the size of a grain of salt. They may be white, gray or tan in color. Although dandruff may resemble nits, dandruff can be easily removed. The nit is stuck on the hair shaft and needs to be pulled off to remove. Head lice should be suspected when there is intense itching of the scalp and the back of the neck. Head lice are usually spread by head to head contact when live lice are present. The school office has information about the specifics of head lice treatment.
The school would appreciate notification if your child gets head lice. This assists us in taking precautionary measures at school. All information is completely confidential.
