Updates from the Principal

Greetings Firebird Nation Families -

I hope everyone's week has gone well! We were excited with the news yesterday about our return to 100% starting right after Spring Break on March 29th. Please remember to complete the 4th Quarter enrollment form for each student in your household by Wednesday, March 3rd. This will communicate to us your choice for In-person or E-Learning for the remainder of the year. We ask that you complete this as soon as possible so that we can make the necessary schedule adjustments and balance classes appropriately. I will include the link to this form below.

Please remember that your choice for In-Person or E-Learning will remain in place for the remainder of the year. We will not be able to make adjustments back and forth due to the impact on class rosters. Also, if an In-Person student is "ill" on a school day, they would miss their classes for that day and need to talk with the teachers about what to make up. We would not be able to offer e-learning for their classes on those days. However, teachers will continue to record their lessons and post these within Schoology so that students could view the lessons they have missed on a particular day.

Basketball season has been progressing well. It has been awesome to see our student athletes in our gym practicing and scrimmaging each week. I can tell that the students have really enjoyed this also! We look forward to our additional sports programs starting up in the coming weeks after Spring Break! Don't forget to pay your athletic fees if you have not done so already. If you have any questions about these fees, please contact my Administrative Assistant, Tina Amos at kamos@d49.org.

We have 1 more week of 3rd quarter remaining. It is important for students to be checking their grades and talking with their teachers to ensure they achieve the grade they are hoping for before the end of the quarter. Our 4th quarter begins on Monday, March 8th. As we enter this last quarter of the year, be watching for information on our traditional end of year ceremonies (NJHS, 8th Grade Promotion, etc.). We are encouraged by the message from the district earlier this week that we may be able to offer these events in person as well. We will communicate more information here once we know more.

Congratulations to our Zone Finalists for their National Recognition at the National Modern Teaching Conference this week. Our finalists were:

  • Cori Owen - Modern Teacher Resilience and Innovation Award Finalist - FMS 6th Grade Math Teacher
  • KayLee Parson - Modern Teacher Resilience and Innovation Award Finalist - FMS Art Teacher
  • Melissa Ardolf - Personalized Learning Classroom of the Year Award Finalist - FESoT PE Teacher
  • Sue Holmes - Change Management District Leader of the Year Finalist - Falcon Zone Leader

And, congratulations to Sue Holmes, who did receive the award for District Change Management Leader of the Year! We are so excited for her and thankful for everything she does for Falcon Zone overall.

I hope everyone has a great weekend! We only have 2 more weeks until Spring Break. Let's continue to work together and do the best we can to support our students! Students, let's make sure to show those Firebird RISE behaviors these next two weeks and enter Spring Break on a positive note!

Sincerely,

Brian Smith

4th Quarter Enrollment Selection - REQUIRED

Big picture
Our 4th quarter begins on March 8th. We will then be returning to 100% In-person learning beginning right after Spring Break. Beginning March 29th, all students will be able to attend FMS every day of the week in-person. We will still offer E-Learning for families wanting to remain on E-Learning for the remainder of the year.We need to gather your enrollment preference information to know whether your students will be In-Person or E-Learning for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year. It is important that you complete this form for each FMS student in your household no later than Wednesday, March 3rd. We will use this information to balance classes appropriately. Please note, it is possible that some student schedules will change with this balancing. We will contact you directly if these changes impact your student.

Submit Pictures for the Yearbook!

Everyone should have received an email from Jostens with a username and temporary password to Yearbook+. This is a way to upload up to TEN photos (that will be screened) to share with the yearbook! Watch the video to see how it works; it's pretty cool!

How YBK+ Works (52 seconds)

YBK+ Promotional Video (15 seconds)

Students - if you haven't taken a school portrait, please still participate because we can pull a picture from what you share to place in the yearbook. Please upload your student's picture here by Wednesday to ensure they are recognized during this year's yearbook. With so much "un-normal" we're trying to keep some things normal!
