Achondroplasia is a genetic disease. This birth defect is present at birth. This disease changes the shape or function of one or more parts of the body.

At birth, the child will likely have:

  • short stature
  • short arms and legs in comparison to body height
  • short fingers
  • large head compared to the body
  • abnormally large forehead
  • underdevelopment of the mid-face

    Somatotropin has revolutionized the treatment of short statues. Growth hormone is currently being used to augment the height of patients with this disease.

    Life expectancy

    The patients with this disease have the same life expectancy of regular humans. But many do die around the age of 70.
