Hello Redbird Community!/Hola Comunidad Redbird
We have had a great fourth quarter in Redbird Nation. Our students rocked their state tests (NSCAS) on March 26 and 27 for 7th and 8th graders, and April 16 and 17 for 6th graders. Students really helped to provide a secure and effective testing environment, and we were so impressed. Students also finished their last round of MAP testing in May./
Hemos tenido un maravillosos cuarto cuatrimestre en la Nacion Redbird. Nuestros estudiantes hicieron un increible trabajo en sus exámenes estatales (NSCAS) el 26 y 27 de marzo nuestros estudiantes de 7o y 8o grados y el 16 y 17 de abril nuestros estudiantes de 6o. Los estudiantes ayudaron a proveer un ambiente seguro y efectivo para tener los examenes y estuvimos impresionados. Los estudiantes terminaron la ultima ronda de los exámenes MAP en mayo.
Summer school begins June 3, and students enrolled during the month of April. Families who are eligible for transportation should receive notification via a letter towards the end of May. Summer school goes from Jun 3-23, from 7:30-11:30 AM./
La escuela de verano comienza el 3 de junio, y los estudiantes se registraron en abril. Las familias que son elegibles para transportacion recibirán una noptificacion con una carta en el correo al final de mayo. 1. Ms. Maddock receiving an award from the NCPA program/La maestra Maddoock recibiendo un reconocimiento de parte del programa NCPA
The NCPA program (Nebraska Preparatory Academy) recognized Ms. Maddock as an influential adult who has helped many of the students who are now in the program. Students voted for her and stopped by Norris to give her this awesome award. Well deserved Ms. Maddock!
El programa NCPA (Academia de Preparación para la Universidad) reconoció a la maestra Maddock como un adulto que ayudó a muchos de los jóvenes que ahora estan en el programa. Los estudiantes votaron por ella y pasaron por Norris para darle este gran premio. Bien merecido maestra Maddock!
2. Fatima Ibrahim at the Rotary luncheon/Fatima Ibrahim en el almuerzo de los Rotarios
Fatima Ibrahim was chosen to speak in front of over 1500 people at the Rotary luncheon which was attended by staff members as well as student leaders chosen by their teachers due to their citizenship, grades, character and behavior. Awesome job students!/
Fatima fue escogida para hablar delante de 1500 personas en el almuerzo de los Rotarios al cuál asistieron personal de la escuela, así como estudiantes líderes escogidos por sus maestros por su ciudadanía, sus calificaciones, su carácter y su comportamiento. Magnífico trabajo estudiantes!

Every year a few lucky teachers are chosen to receive this coveted award. Miss Hansen is well deserving due to her great job as a teacher at Norris. Amazing job Miss Hansen! We are proud of you!/

NCPA Winners/Estudiantes ganadores del programa NCPA
Erika Ramirez, Marco Gutierrez, Yaremi Aguilar, Adrian Hernadez, Johana Rodriguez, y Marcela Gonzalez were the six students admitted to the NCPA (Nebraska College Preparatory Academy) program from Norris Middle. These students will be a part of this program through out high school and if successful will earn a full ride scholarship to UNL. Only 25 students were admitted into the program from all Middle Schools. The first round consisted on students completing an application, writing an essay, and getting a letter of recommendation. In addition, parents had to write a statement about the support they would provide to their students. The second round (not all students passed to this round) consisted on an interview. We received the news on the last day of school! Everyone was elated!! So proud!!
We are also proud of all the students who applied, even if they were not chosen. We know that you all have a bright future ahead of you. The fact that you qualified and applied already makes you winners. Congratulations!!/

Estos estudiantes serán parte del programa durante la preparatoria y si son exitosos recibirán una beca completa para la Universidad de Nebraska en Lincoln. Solo 25 estudiantes fueron elegidos de todas la secundarias. La primera ronda consistió en completar una aplicación, escribir un ensayo, y obtener una carta de recomendación. También los padres de familia (tutores) tuvieron que escribir una nota en donde explicaron el apoyo que le darán a sus hijos durante el programa. La segunda ronda (no todos los estudiantes pasaron) consistió en una entrevista. ¡Recibimos la gran noticia el último día de escuela! ¡Todos estabamos felices y orgullosos!
También estamos orgullosos de todos los estudiantes que aplicaron, aunque no los hayan elegido. Nosotros sabemos que todos tienen un futuro brillante en su porvenir. El haber tenido los requisitos y haber aplicado ya los hace unos ganadores ¡Felicidades!

6th Grade Team/6O Grado
It’s been a great, but cold, 4th quarter for our 6th graders and we can’t believe we are close to the end! The students started off the quarter with MAP testing.
On January 31, we went on a field trip to the symphony. They tied story elements with music from Romeo & Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Harry Potter!
Students whose birthdays are in January and February also celebrated their birthdays during Redbird Block.
Ha sido un sensacional, pero muy frio cuarto cuatrimestre para nuestros estudiantes de 6o grado y no podemos creer que tan cercano está el fin de año. Los estudiantes comenzaron el cuatrimestre con su examen MAP.
El 31 de enero tuvimos un paseo a la sinfónica. Ellos conectaron elementos musicales de Romeo y Julieta, Un sueño de Verano y de Harry Potter!

In social studies, they are finishing up Ancient Rome and now will be starting Medieval Europe.
In language arts, students have been reading stories about making your voice heard. They are currently writing an argumentative essay.
In science, students have completed the Energy unit and are learning about cells and human systems and dissecting frogs!
6th gade DL students in Language Arts presented speeches on a topic choosing a side, giving a claim, and providing evidence to convince their listeners to choose their side of whether or not people should own exotic animals./
Los estudiantes tuvieron su examen estatal el 16 y 17 de abril. Tuvimos dos paseos más; uno a un show de caballos y otro a ver un juego de baseball.
En Matemáticas, los estudiantes han trabajado en expresiones y ecuaciones.
En Ciencias Sociales, estan terminando el tema de la Roma Antigua y estarán comenzando la Europa Medieval.
En Artes del Lenguaje, los estudiantes han estado leyendo historias acerca de como hacer que su voz sea escuchada. Estan actualmente escribiendo un ensayo argumentativo.
En Ciencia, los estudiantes han completado la unidad de energia y han aprendido acerca de los sistemas de las celulas y del ser humano. Tambien disecaron ranas!
Los estudiantes de Doble Lenguaje en Artes del Lenguaje dieron presentaciones dando su opinión y proveyendo evidencia para convencer a su audiencia a estar de acuerdo con ellos acerca de si las personas deben tener o no animales exóticos.

Fourth quarter is well underway and students on Team 7A are very busy in all their core classes. Students have been working very hard learning new content and technology daily.
The teachers on Team 7A would like to remind parents and students that it is important for students to come to class prepared to learn and that they bring the necessary materials that are needed for them to be successful.
El cuarto cuatrimeste ya esta avanzado y los estudiantes de 7A estan muy ocupados con sus clases base. Los estudiantes han estado trabajando muy arduamente aprendiendo nuevo contenido y tecnología diariamente. Los maestros de 7A quieren recordarles a los estudiantes y padres de familia que es importante para los estudiantes venir preparados a clase para aprender y traer todos sus materiales necesarios para ser exitosos.
Students who are meeting the team’s expectations are going to be rewarded! As we reach the end of the quarter, we want to remind students that now is the time to get any and all missing assignments turned in to their teachers. If students are not sure what they are missing they can check their grades online, look on Teams (this is an app on their iPad), or talk to their teacher during Redbird block or after school. We want to see your child reach their greatest potential and we enjoy welcoming them into our classrooms every day. We hope they have a restful and relaxing spring break and when they return, we hope that they are ready to break through some personal goals and knock out the NSCAS test. Have a great spring break!/

Ahora que nos acercamos al final del cuatrimestre, queremos recordarles a los estudiantes que ahora es cuando necesitan entregar cualquier trabajo que les falta. Science is learning about plate tectonics (the structure of the earth's crust and the effects of its movements). /

In Math class, students are working on probability and how things can change when different events occur./

In Language Arts class, students are learning about civil rights and will be writing a short paper over a civil right of their choice. Students are also working on their book report, which is half of their grade for this quarter!/

In Social Studies, students are learning about the formation of the Soviet Union, communism, and the Cold War. /

We are very excited for the results of this school year. Congratulations to our Outstanding Dual Language students of the year at Norris-Mia Silva Montalvo and Marcela Gonzalez. They are roles model due to their leadership, behavior and academics. We wish all Dual Language 8th graders success in their future. See you next year 6th and 7th graders. Our amazing Dual Language students: Ruth Rauda, Natalie Portillo and Andrea Alas were treated to a delicious lunch at the Oliver Garden to thank them for giving the Pledge of Allegiance in both English and Spanish as well as our Mission Statement and positive thought of the day. English Language Arts are working on the big idea of Legacy. We are just finishing the Diary of Anne Frank and will also be reading Between Shades of Grey also known as Ashes in the Snow by Rupta Septys./

Many classes are working on projects that count toward summative grades. This means now is not the time to slack off. Now is the time to live up to your potential. Team 8C students have been enjoying the warmer weather, and are looking forward to the exciting things that summer break and high school will bring! We have been showing our character and strength by doing our best on both state testing and district MAP testing. In each of our content area classes, we continue to participate in interesting and important learning activities. Be sure to continue doing your best and end the year strong! /
Los estudiantes del 8C han estado disfrutando del mejor clima, y estan emocionados por todo lo que viene con el verano y la preparatoria! Hemos mostrado nuestra fortaleza esforzándonos en el examen estatal y el examen MAP. En cada una de nuestras clases, continuamos participando en interesantes e importantes actividades de aprendizaje. In Social Studies class, students are working on our Gilded Age and Progressive Era Unit. From May 1 to May 10, we will be working on our final project for this unit. Students will use iPads to create different activities and assignments which will be graded in place of a traditional test. The class final exam will be the last days of school. /
En Ciencias Sociales, los estudiantes estan trabajando en las unidades de la edad dorada y de la edad progresiva. Del 1o al 10 de mayo, los estudiantes trabajaron en su proyecto final de esta unidad. Los estudiantes usaron iPads para crear diferentes actividades y tareas que se usaron en lugar de un examen tradicional. El examen final se llevará a cabo en los últimos días de escuela.
In Pre-Algebra, students had been learning about volumes of cylinders, cones and spheres as well as surface areas of cylinders and cones. One of the questions on the unit test asked students in a regular sheet of 8.5” x 11’” paper had more volume if 1) the length was equivalent to the height, 2) the width was equivalent to the height or 3) there would be no difference in the volume. It was interesting to hear some of the answers. Pre-Algebra students are now working with scatter plots and lines of best fit.
En Pre-Algebra, los estudiantes han estado aprendiendo acerca de volúmenes de cilindros, conos y esferas así como áreas de cilindros y conos. Una de nuestras preguntas del examen de unidad preguntó si una hoja regular de 8.5" x 11" tenia volumen si 1) el largo era equivalente a su base 2)el ancho era equivalente a su altura 3) no habría diferencia en su volumen. Fue interesante leer algunas de sus respuestas. Los estudiantes de Pre-Algebra trabajaron en su gráfica de disperción y líneas de mejor ajuste.
Geometry students have been studying quadrilaterals. They have been learning about the unique qualities of parallelograms, rectangles, squares, rhombi, trapezoids and kites. They will be learning about right triangles and trigonometry in the next unit.

In English Language Arts class, students have studied Anne Frank’s Legacy this quarter. We have read her diary and studied the Holocaust. Students in Mrs. Wagner’s class have been working on a research writing project as well.

In Science class this quarter, we are focused on change over time. We are going to be looking for patterns among related organisms.

SPORTS/DEPORTES
Spring Sports/Deportes de primavera
Our spring sports seasons were wonderful! Students participated in soccer and track, and had great success! Boys soccer finished second in the city, and girls soccer finished 7th. Our track team competed at the city finals on Friday, May 10. Great job to our coaches and athletes!/
¡Nuestros deportes de primavera estuvieron sensacionales! Los estudiantes participaron en fútbol y en atletismo y tuvieron mucho éxito! El equipo varonil terminó en segundo lugar en la ciudad y el equipo femeníl terminó en 7o. Nuestro equipo de atletismo compitió en las finales de la ciudad el 10 de Mayo (¡Feliz dia de las madres!!!) Buen trabajo a nuestros entrenadores y atletas!

Academic Pentathlon/Pentatlon Academico
The Academic Pentathlon just team just wrapped up a very successful season. This year, the topic was the 1960's and the team has been studying the subject diligently since August. They have competed in both State and Regional testing. Two weeks ago, they competed in the OPS SuperQuiz and had a very strong showing, finishing in 4th place! Two Redbird Students both completed the season earning individual medals. It was a great season and we couldn't be more proud of what we have accomplished this school year!/
El equipo de Pentatlón académico terminó una temporada exitosa. Este año, el tema fue los 60s y el equipo estuvo estudiando desde agosto. Ellos participaron en la competencia estatal y regional. En abril compitieron en el SuperQuiz de OPS y ganaron 4o lugar! Dos estudiantes de Norris ganaron medallas individuales. Fue una maravillosa temporada y no podemos estar mas orgullosos de lo que han logrado este año escolar!
Drill Team
Drill Team practiced very hard for our march in the Cinco de Mayo parade on Saturday, May 4th as well as our Florence parade on May 11th. They will participate in the La Vista Days Parade on May 25. Thank you to all you supported us!/
El grupo de baile practicó muy duro para nuestra marcha del desfile del cinco de mayo y la del desfile de Florence. Van a participar en el desfile de La Vista el 25 de mayo. Gracias a todos los que nos apoyaron!
No Place For Hate
Students continue to meet every other week. They volunteered to help t-shirts during Parent-Teacher conferences. Students learned about empathy, self-esteem, stress management and resiliency. Students shared what LOVE is for them during a February activity. 18 students helped out at the Open Door Mission at the beginning of May and had a blast organizing donated items. We had a pizza celebration the last Friday of school. Thanks to Mrs.Newman and Mr. Heybrock for joining us and helping us get our students to the site.
Los estudiantes se siguen reuniendo cada tercer viernes. Algunos estudiantes ayudaron a vender playeras durante conferencias de Padres de familia. Los estudiantes en este grupo han aprendido acerca de empatía, autoestima, manejo del estres y resiliencia. Los estudiantes compartieron lo que el AMOR significa para ellos durante una actividad en febrero. 18 estudiantes ayudar en Open Door Mission organizar artículos que fueron donados. Mil gracias a la señora Newman y al señor Heybrock por acompañarnos y ayudarnos a llevar a los estuduiantes al centro. Les encanto esta actividad. El último viernes antes de salir de vacaciones, tuvimos una fiesta con pizza.

GSA proudly celebrated #TrueColors Day to promote awareness and support to the growing LGBTQ homeless youth population. We continue to work toward making all students feel loved and accepted here at Norris Middle School and our community!/

Student Council organized our final Spirit Week this year! All students and staff enjoyed voting for the theme they wanted on each day of our final spirit week.
We also celebrated our office staff for Administrative Professionals Day! We appreciate all of you and everything you do for us here at Norris Middle School!
El consejo estudiantil organizo la última semana de espíritu escolar. Todos los estudiantes y personal escolar disfrutaron el votar por los temas que querían en cada uno de los dias de nuestra final semana de espíritu escolar.

Book Club/ Club de Lectura
Book Club wrapped up the year reading Carl Dueker's book Runner to prepare for his author visit to Norris in April. We also finished reading the book Wonder, and had some wonderful conversations about kindness and respecting the differences of others. On our last meeting of the year, we walked to our neighborhood public library, the Willa Cather branch. Be sure to keep reading over the summer, Redbirds!/

Norris Middle School is committed to having a positive and safe learning environment. After receiving feedback from students and staff we introduced Redbirds RISE. RISE is an acronym for Respect, Integrity, Safety, and Empathy.
MTSS-B (Positivismo, Intervenir y Restorar)
La secundaria Norris esta comprometida a tener un ambiente de aprendizaje positivo y seguro. Despues de recibir las sugerencias de nuestros estudiantes y personal docente, presentamos Redbirds RISE. RISE es un acrónimo para Respeto, Integridad, Seguridad, y Empatía.
RESPECT: Respect means keeping hands and feet to ourselves and following directions and rules.
RESPETO: Respeto quiere decir mantener nuestros pies y manos en nuestra area y no tocar a nadie mas. También es el seguir instrucciones y reglas.
INTEGRITY: Integrity is doing the right thing because it is the right thing to do.
INTEGRIDAD: La integridad es hacer lo correcto porque es lo correcto.
SAFETY: Safety is creating a calm and orderly environment and letting adults know of problems
SEGURIDAD: Seguridad es crear un ambiente tranquilo y ordenado haciéndole saber a los adultos si hay cualquier problema.
EMPATHY: Empathy is showing kindness and trying to help students see other perspectives and feelings.
EMPATIA: Empatía es mostrar amabilidad y tratar de ayudar a estudiantes a entender las perspectivas y sentimientos de los demás.
Please help us work with your student by discussing RISE attributes at home. Our goal for your child is that they can be successful and learn, that your child is liked by others and has friends, that your child feels good about themselves and takes good care of themselves when overwhelmed with emotion.
Por favor ayúdenos a trabajar con su estudiante y hable acerca de los atributos RISE en casa. Nuestra meta para sus hijos(as) es que sean exitosos(as) y que aprendan que son queridos y que tienen amigos, que sus hijos(as) se quiera a si mismos(as) y que se cuiden y sepan que hacer cuando tengan muchas emociones.
REDBIRD BUCKS: At Norris we recognize students who demonstrate respect, integrity, safety, and kindness through Redbird Bucks. Redbird Bucks can be used to attend field trips with pizza parties, raffles for gift cards and prizes, and for items such as stickers, gel pens, pencils, etc. We want to recognize all of our amazing Redbirds who are doing the right things everyday.
BILLETES REDBIRD: En la secundaria Norris los estudiantes que demuestran respeto, integridad, seguridad, y amabilidad son reconocidos con Billetes Redbird. Estos billetes pueden ser usados para asistir a paseos con fiesta de pizza, rifas de tarjetas de regalos y premios. Tambien los pueden canjear por estampas, plumas de gel, lápices, etc. Queremos reconocer a todos nuestros maravillosos Redbirds que están haciendo lo correcto día con día.
September Redbirds on the RISE: The students in the picture on the right were our September Redbirds on the RISE. They demonstrated respect, integrity, safety and responsibility and were nominated by their teachers. Congrats!

Counseling Update/Noticias del departamento de consejeria
The school counseling department has been busy this quarter by offering many opportunities to our students and families.
El departamento de consejería ha estado muy ocupado este cuatrimestre ofreciendo muchas oportunidades para estudiantes y familias.
On March 21st we ended our 6 week long parenting classes through Boys Town. We offered child care as well as a light dinner. If you are interested on taking these classes next school year, please call Mrs. Zermeno at 531 299-8348 to add you to our list. We will contact you when the classes are set up once again.
El 21 de marzo terminamos nuestras clases para padres de familia que ofrecimos por medio de Boys Town. Tuvimos cuidado de niños y una cena ligera. Si usted esta interesado en asistir a nuestras próximas clases el próximo año escolar, favor de llamar a la consejera Zermeño al 531 299-8348 para ser añadido(a) a nuestra lista. Lo(a) contactaremos en cuanto tengamos nuestras nuevas fechas.
At the beginning of February we began offering a Grief group through Grief's journey. Students meet every Thursday from 9am until 10am. This is an 8 week long small group.
In January we began our Banister group with our 6th grade girls. They learn the 12 pillars of leadership through this program that meets Wednesday through Friday. Students meet twice a week, once in a small group and once in a large group with all 12 students.
Al comienzo de febrero comenzamos a ofrecer un grupo de "lidiando con el dolor" por medio de Grief's journey. Los estudiantes se reunieron cada jueves de 9am a 10am. Este es un grupo que duraró 8 semanas.
En enero comenzamos nuestro grupo de Banister para niñas de 6o grado. Ella aprendieron los 12 pilares de liderazgo por medio de este programa el cuál se reunió de miércoles a viernes. Las estudiantes se reunían dos veces por semana, una en un grupo pequeño y la otra con todas las 12 estudiantes.
This quarter Ms. Ward provided a Stress relieving small group. This group meets twice a week during RBB.
On February, sixty 8th graders had the opportunity to take a tour to College of Saint Mary and to METRO Community College. In April we had a tour to UNO and our last tour was to UNL at the beginning on May.
Este cuatrimestre la consejera Ward ofreció un grupo pequeño de manejo del estrés. Este grupo se reune dos veces por semana durante RBB.
En febrero, sesenta estudiantes tuvieron la oportunidad de visitar College of Saint Mary o el colegio de la comunidad de METRO. En abril visitamos UNO y en mayo 20 estudiantes visitaron UNL.
8th graders had their Orientation and Registration. They should all know which High School they are enrolled in. If students do not agree with their placement, they can fill out a transfer form in April.
Los estudiantes de 8o grado tuvieron su orientación y registración para la preparatoria. Ellos deben ya saber en que preparatoria estan registrados. Si usted y su estudiante no estan de acuerdo con la preparatoria que se les dio, puede completar una forma de transferencia.
