A Look at Our Week
Thanks to all the parents who were able to join us on our Field Trip! Not only did the children love having you there, it really helped us keep everybody safe. Thank you for your eyes, hands and hearts!! The children had lots of fun getting fingerprinted, sitting in the firetruck and turning the lights on in the police car. We will have another visit from the FD this month, in our school, to follow up with fire safety information. There will be another opportunity to join us on a Field Trip when we visit Stepp's Apple Orchard in October. I will be sending out permission slips on Monday in blue folders. Please sign and return ASAP. Thank you!
Many of your children have proudly been reporting that they have learned their sight words, and are excited for this week's installment! I will be sending home four more sight words to memorize this week, and your child will continue to bring home a book each night to read to/with you. If your child brings home a book that is labelled with an 'A', they may be able to read it to you. Encourage them to look at the picture for clues as to what the unknown word could be, and cross-check that with the first letter sound of the word. If they bring home a book of interest that is not able to be read by them independently, focus on asking questions before, during and after reading.
For example, "Looking at the front cover, what do you think this book is about?" "Who are the characters in the story?" "Can you tell me what happened in the story?".
Please keep the book in the baggies, to help preserve them in their travels! Send back any library books on Thursday for Library Day.
In Fundations this week we are going to learn another vowel: "o-octopus/o/" and consonant "c-cat-/c/", to add to the 5 consonants and two vowels that we have already learnt: n,m,b,f, t, i and u. Letter recognition, the sounds that they make, and how to write them are our major focus at the moment.
We will be starting our Counting Jar books and Counting Books this week in Math. We are working on how to count and represent numbers from 0-10. Key words are: Total, More, Fewer. Thank you so much for your hexagon pictures last week. The children loved seeing them on the digital board, and they inspired interesting mathematical and scientific discussions. Keep counting everything at home and asking your child, "Which has more?" when counting two different groups of objects.
Math is integrated throughout our day as we count everything there is to count! We are now learning how to record this data, and we will be writing a "Counting Book" this week in Math Workshop. We continue to sort shapes, objects and people by attributes.
Thank you for all of your work at home. I am seeing such development in literacy skills as a result of your efforts.
