FOLGER SHAKESPEARE LIBRARY SUMMER PD LINE-UP SNEAK PEAK
Folger Education will offer these PDs this summer. Zoom links will be added as soon as they become available.
NAVIGATING RACE AND DIFFERENCE: In Shakespeare, In Class, and Elsewhere, Thursday, July 14, 2022: 10:00 am--5:00 pm via zoom
One long, full day of learning together—information, discussion, hands-on classroom practice, materials, inspiration. Wait . . . is race to be found in Shakespeare?! Yes! In Romeo, Macbeth, Hamlet, and on from there. Most often, literature—and certainly Shakespeare—can be the catalyst for meaningful conversations about race and difference. How do these topics arise? Should they? How do I, the teacher, manage those discussions? Do they have to be awkward? Overall, what’s my role? What’s the result I should be working toward?
TUITION: $350 (Non-Teacher Members), $300 (discounted price for Folger Teacher Members)
CEU CREDITS: 10
THE FOLGER METHOD IN ONE FELL SWOOP: Principles, Essential Classroom Practices, Effective Learning for All Students, Wednesday, July 20, 2022, and Thursday, July 21, 2022: 10:00 am--5:00 pm (both days) via zoom
For the first time ever, Folger staff and experienced mentor teachers take you through the principles and the essential practices that provide you and all of your students with a way to approach not just Shakespeare but any complex text. We’ll work with the Folger Method across several different plays. At the end of these two days, you will have experienced all parts of this proven method, you will see that it applies to all kinds of complex texts, you will have practiced teaching and learning this way, and at the end of two days, we will send you off with new techniques, new confidence, and new materials—some of them sneak previews from the forthcoming Folger Guides To Teaching Shakespeare.
TUITION: $500 (Non-Teacher Members), $450 (discounted for Folger Teacher Members)
CEU CREDITS: 25
A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM IN 3 WAYS: Through Scholarship, On Stage, and In Your Classroom, Thursday, July 28, 2022: 10:00 am--3:00 pm via zoom
If you teach A Midsummer Night’s Dream—but maybe particularly if you don’t—dive in with us: You’ll experience it from the perspective of a 21st century scholar and from the point of view of cast members in this summer’s Folger Theatre production of the Dream at DC’s National Building Museum. Perhaps most important, you’ll work with mentor teachers and practice teaching the play using materials from the forthcoming Folger Teaching Guide to Teaching A Midsummer Night’s Dream. You will leave with new knowledge, new ways to look at and to teach this old play, and materials to help you do just that.
TUITION: $300 (Non-Teacher Members), $250 (discounted for Folger Teacher Members)

return borrowed novels to the curriculum office
As you are finishing your school year, you may come across bags or boxes of novels that you need to return to the curriculum office. These would be ones borrowed from the curriculum office, not ones from the warehouse. Books borrowed from the warehouse may remain in your building's book room for reuse next year. Items being returned to the curriculum office can be sent through school mail or CCS delivery services to Southland Center, Suite 125, 3700 South High Street, Columbus, OH 43207 to the attention of Carla Mae Phillips. Thanks:)
final exams are optional-no final exam schedule
Based on BOE Policy #5421 approved on April 15, 2015, semesterization is permitted with teachers having the OPTION to give final exams. The district has no plans for a final exam window for the end of this school year.
Classes Granting Fewer Than One (1) Credit
-For a class granting less than one (1) credit for which a final exam is not given, the final grade shall be calculated by adding the quality points for each quarter's grade. The total shall then be divided by four (4). The final grade shall be determined by applying the resulting quality points to the Final Grade Calculation Scale.
-For a class granting less than one (1) credit for which a final exam is given at the discretion of the teacher, the final grade shall be calculated by first doubling and adding the quality points for each quarter's grade, and then adding those quality points and the quality points for the exam grade. The total shall then be divided by five (5). The final grade shall be determined by applying the resulting quality points to the Final Grade Calculation Scale. This Grade Calculator has two formulas for semester grades (one with an exam and one without an exam).

SECONDARY LITERACY
As you know, most of the English curriculum sessions on the District PD Days this year had a literacy focus. That is because CCS is developing the CCS Secondary Literacy Plan which is rooted in Ohio’s Plan to Raise Literacy Achievement and guided by the Adolescent Simple View of Reading. The plan spans from intermediate literacy that crosses curricular areas to disciplinary literacy that reflects the demands of specific disciplines while allowing for individualized intensive interventions, as needed. Inherent in the plan is that students are reading, writing, and discussing every day in classrooms. The components of the plan are: Academic Language, Reading Comprehension, Writing Competency, Classroom Discussion, and Collective Efficacy. Next school year, literacy will be a main focus for the district and sessions focused on the Secondary Literacy Plan and its components will be offered on the District PD Days. Over summer break, if you want to dig deeper into any of the main components of the secondary literacy plan, here are some sites, resources, strategies, recordings, and articles that may offer insight and enrichment. Note: The list below is not inclusive of everything you currently have in your adopted resources (e.g. StudySync) which are the MAIN items for instruction and support of the literacy components and may also be a great place to focus your attention this summer.

ODE WRITING BOOK STUDY
Join the Ohio Department of Education for a summer virtual book study based on The Writing Revolution. This book study is an opportunity for educators across the state to collaborate, brainstorm and discuss ways to support students with explicit writing instruction. Students often struggle with the writing process, so this discussion group will cover topics like constructing complex sentences, developing thought-provoking paragraphs and writing coherent compositions. Participants will share ideas about providing just-in-time writing instruction with an overall goal of accelerating student learning. The strategies shared can be used with any curriculum and across content areas, but most are useful for grades 2 and up. The book study is meant to supplement independent reading with engaging virtual discussion and other hands-on activities.
Participants will need to secure their own copies of the text and may attend a single session or all the sessions. All sessions are free and will be recorded and posted for viewing on the Resources for English Language Arts webpage.
- No registration is necessary.
- Certificates of attendance will be provided for each session.

AUTHOR VISIT: MARGARET ATWOOD
Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) is joining with eight other central Ohio library systems to present A Conversation with Margaret Atwood on Wednesday, June 15 at 7 p.m. at the Palace Theatre. WOSU’s Ann Fisher will moderate the conversation. Tickets, which start at $25, are on sale exclusively through cbusarts.com. Atwood has long been a literary titan, but “current events have polished the oracular sheen of her reputation” (The New Yorker). With her 1985 novel The Handmaid’s Tale adapted into an 11-time Emmy Award-winning television series, and its sequel, The Testaments, winning the 2019 Booker Prize, Atwood’s sharp eye is more crucial – and prescient – than ever. Her latest release, Burning Questions, is a collection of more than 50 essays that aim her prodigious intellect and impish humor at our world. From debt to tech, the climate crisis to freedom; from when to dispense advice to the young (answer: only when asked) to how to define granola, we have no better questioner of the many and varied mysteries of our human universe.
