Teacher Office Hours:

Teacher Office hours will start on Wednesday, January 15th. Passes will be given to all students and reminders will be emailed to parents on Monday night. Students are also welcome to show-up and ask for extra help. We will have a study hall room in C-1 (Art room) for students who wish to stay after school and do homework.

Office Hours Overview:

Starting in January 2020, Sequoia will be piloting a new program in which all teachers will hold “Office Hours” in classrooms on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month from 1:10-1:45. This program, while open to all students, is designed specifically for students who have missing work, need to make up work and/or tests due to absences, or simply just need more time with a given teacher. “Invitations” for individual students will be sent via email to the parent email address that we have on file and students will be invited directly from the inviting teacher. Included in the invitation will be the subject, teacher, and location for that student. If a teacher directly invites your student to Office Hours, it is expected that the student attend. If a conflict exists, the student needs to explain why they cannot make it to that teacher or an administrator. The goal for this program is not to be punitive but rather to give students an extra opportunity to complete work, ask questions, get organized, and benefit from time with a teacher in a less crowded environment. All teachers will participate in various capacities – if not holding their own office hours, they will be helping students in an alternative classroom.

CJSF for 7th and 8th Graders:

CJSF is an organization for 7th & 8th graders with good grades & citizenship. Applications will be in the office, “B” side, Friday January 10. Students should fill out the application, attach their report card with comments and turn it in to D-6, Ms Montoya. We meet on Thursdays 2:45-3:30. Our first meeting will be January 30, in D-6. If a student qualifies and cannot come to our Thursday meetings, they should apply anyway and will become an inactive member. Our main focus is to do service projects and have fun together. Check out the display case by the B side of the office and get an idea of the type of projects we work on. January 23 is the deadline to get applications in. Students should plan to come to our first meeting January 30. We will be electing new officers.

Parent Patrol:

We ask for all families to work one day of Parent Patrol per student per year. We have found that these extra parent eyes on campus help keep our students safe. Click here to sign up if you haven't done so already. Parents are more than welcome to do extra days as well.

Have a great weekend!

Character Education Corner

Character Ed-- MINDFULNESS

Mindfulness is being intensely aware of what you're sensing and feeling in the moment, without interpretation or judgment.

What are some examples of mindfulness?

· Pay attention. It's hard to slow down and notice things in a busy world. Try to take the time to experience your environment with all of your senses — touch, sound, sight, smell and taste. For example, when you eat a favorite food, take the time to smell, taste and truly enjoy it.

· Live in the moment. Try to intentionally bring an open, accepting and discerning attention to everything you do. Find joy in simple pleasures.

· Accept yourself. Treat yourself the way you would treat a good friend.

· Focus on your breathing. When you have negative thoughts, try to sit down, take a deep breath and close your eyes. Focus on your breath as it moves in and out of your body. Sitting and breathing for even just a minute can help.

Which one are you?

8th Grade Parent Ad in 2020 Yearbook

New Attachment Below

8th grade parents can purchase an ad for their child to commemorate their last year at Sequoia. The cost of the color ad is $35 and includes a photo and a message from the parents. There are two ways you can purchase your ad:

  1. You can submit your information online, design your own ad and pay by credit card (see attached flier). Submit by Friday, January 10th.
  2. You can also submit your information directly to room E-5 or Mrs. Amerson’s box in the office by Friday, January 10th. Use the following checklist:

o Photos (Do NOT physically cut your photos). We will electronically scan your photos. If you want to focus on just one area of a photo, use Post-It Notes to cover the unwanted areas.

o Text (maximum of 25 words)

o If you would like your photo returned to you in June, include a self-addressed stamped envelope with your order.

o Please write your name and address on the back of the photo submitted. Although it is rare for the yearbook staff to misplace a photo, it can happen. Help make sure your photo is returned to you by taking this extra step.

o Cash or check payable to “SMS”.

If you have any questions, please leave a message for Mrs. Amerson at 682-8000 ext. 5675 or email questions to amersonl@mdusd.org
