Catholic Schools Week 2016

Top 5 Things To Know

1. ICSJ enjoyed a great variety of activities that really hit home our Catholic Schools Week national theme: "Communities of Faith, Knowledge, and Service." We gathered together for Family Mass on Sunday, and this past Wednesday we gathered as a school (even in our wacky outfits). Many students donated new books to the book drive, and all students personalized bookmarks to be given with the books. Other highlights included the faculty vs. 8th grade basketball game (congrats 8th graders!), parent/grandparent day, the book fair, Twin Tuesday, and more!

Today, students in 7 & 8th grades will compete in the annual science fair, and student representatives in 3-7th + all 8th graders will spell words we've never even heard of at the spelling bee.

2. This is the BIG EVENT - our 8th graders celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation TONIGHT with Bishop Kane. We are so excited for this step in their faith lives and are so grateful for all family and friends who have helped make this day so special. (8th grade parents - As mentioned in the previous email, please arrive by 6:40pm.)

3. Red folders are going home this weekend like always. Please review and sign your child's folder - the following assessments will be coming home from me:

6 LA: Listening Assessment

6 Religion: none

8 Religion: Confirmation unit reflection assessment

4. Lent starts next Wednesday (2/10) - please join the ICSJ Hill Street campus for 8 a.m. Mass at St. Joseph's church. Mass will be led by the students of 8A.

5. Scroll down to the very bottom for photos of 8th graders with their parents at the student/faculty game. What a fun night! (I don't believe I missed adding anyone's photo, but if I did, please let me know and I will add it.)

Week in Review

6 LA

Two big things happened this week in 6th grade Language Arts: 1) Students moved from their argumentative essay outlines to their drafts (which are due on Monday, 2/8); 2) Students finished their nonfiction book club texts. Though we only had three days of class this week (due to Catholic Schools Week events), students worked hard to accomplish quite a bit! (And a special thank you to parents/grandparents who joined us for the first half of our LA class on Monday - it was great to see you!)

6 Religion

After our lesson on aging, life, and death last week in Family Life, the students watched the movie adaptation of Mitch Albom's "Tuesdays with Morrie" (starring Jack Lemmon). After the film, we had a brief discussion before students reflected on a written assessment and in an artistic quotes project.

If you haven't read the book (or seen the movie), I highly recommend it - there are many lessons to be learned from Morrie's "final thesis" about the important things in life.

8 Religion

Final preparations were made this week for Confirmation - we watched videos, prayed through the Confirmation Mass Gospel reading about John the Baptist, and went through the structure of the Vigil and Mass. 8B had their pizza party with Fr. Larry over in the parish office on Monday.

Today, 8A will plan next Wednesday's Mass. (8B will not have class due to the spelling bee.)
