J. W. Leary Junior High School
December 5, 2021
Everyone,
It was wonderful to see so many parents/guardians at the concert on Thursday. It was amazing to hear the kids performing live. I know from talking with them after it was exciting for them and something they enjoyed. I appreciate your patience as we figured everything out.
I am very excited for the band/orchestra concert 1 week from Tuesday!
The parent drop-off loop is getting better!! Thank you!! A right hand turn only sign has been posted on the stop sign. Please abide by this sign. I also must emphasize that drop-off/pick-up in front of the school is not OK. The cars and sudden stops are creating problems for the bus drivers as they are entering/exiting the bus loop.
Please complete this digital access survey.

School Situations/Information
This year has had its high points and also has presented challenges.
After our WEB orientation in the early Fall and a few follow-up events we continue to work to reach and support every child in the building. In addition to Positivity Project implementation and other conversations about student needs/concerns in advisory, Mr. Norris, Mrs. Zaza, Mr. Alexander and I have been going into classes to engage children in conversations about being safe, responsible, and respectful. We encouraged the children to talk with us when they become aware of something that may be of concern.
We are all focused on children coming into school and focusing on what they are here to do, learn. Given various events locally and nationally I encourage you to reach out to us at school (Mr. Norris, Mrs. Zaza, Mr. Alexander and I) if there is something you are aware of that is a concern.
We know that children are on social media and that several platforms can be a place where students are telling lies and reaching out saying pretty awful things. Please talk with your children about use of the platforms and what they are posting.
I encourage you to reach out to us at school if there is something you are aware of that is a concern. All concerns expressed to the school are thoroughly investigated and appropriate action is taken. We cannot do something if we do not know about it. It is a service to the entire community when items are shared.
Last week the administration investigated a potential threat against the school that was determined by the police to be unfounded. We are working very closely with several community agencies. You may see continued police presence around the building. I appreciate the Massena Police Department's help and support as well as the help/support of Mr. Brady and other school district officials as we navigate this unique time.
We are all in this together and we all have the same goal. Thank you for your support!

Teen Virtual Leadership Summit
The event was presented by the St. Lawrence County Youth Bureau with speaker JC Pohl. We had several student leaders attend to understand their role in the COVID era. The session focused on empowering the students to help make proactive changes. The students who attended were engaged in brainstorming challenges that are present within the school.
Once challenges were identified Mrs. Goodrich, Mrs. Jarrett and I supported the group in brainstorming and forming out of box solutions. We continue to work with the children on this work. So far, they are off to a great start instituting some peer-peer support during study hall and to help when people are having challenges.
A few have also reached out to Mrs. Shoen to begin some support groups centered around LGBTQ+ support and helping children deal with challenges.
A Fantastic Chorus Concert--great job everyone!!!
I want you to know how much I appreciate all of you for your support with the concert. It was a tough year with the way COVID impacted everything.
- Mr. Brady and the Board of Education for working with us to provide a live presentation
- Mrs. Robideau who worked to prepare the children;
- Mr. Lincoln for playing the piano;
- Mr. Oliver for setting up the auditorium, checking people in and running the lights/sound;
- Mr. Corigliano and Mrs. Walton for their special effects during the 7th grade show;
- The custodial staff at the High School for their adaptation and for helping with set up;
- and to your children--they sounded amazing. I am so proud of their brave spirits for adjusting to being on stage (which was scary!) and their outstanding performance.
