Also, Wolf's Crossing staff is arriving to work at the same time we are dropping off our students. Members of their staff shared concerns about safety. I have worked with their principal and their staff will enter the parking lot from Wolf's Crossing Road. It is important for all our community to enter Eola. We are one community. We need to take care of each other and be considerate, calm, and courteous.

Be Part of the 8th Grade Awards and Recognition Night
Students have the opportunity to design the program cover and submit a video speech about their time at Bednarcik. Flyers with information regarding these two opportunities are being distributed through Language Arts classes this week.
Cupcake Wars at its Best!
FCS Brought Some Popcorn and Lots of Sunshine to Staff
FCS 2 has been talking about citizenship and community service. Since we were doing bus evacuation last week, FCS decided to make cards for our bus drivers. Our remote students created "Popcorn Thank Yous" for staff. In-person students put them together and passed them out. The class wanted to do something for our office staff that have been working so hard through all of the changes this year.
We are so proud of our amazing and thoughtful kids at Bednarcik.
Suicide Prevention Awareness
We want to raise awareness of the fact that suicides start to spike in the spring (April and May) and we want to keep our students healthy and safe. The pandemic has negatively impacted virtually ALL teens’ mental health--particularly teens who were already struggling with mental health issues and/or experienced additional stressors related to COVID-19. Please help us by increasing your vigilance at this time of year!
Here are some examples of youth that may be at a heightened risk for suicide:
- A teen with a personal or family history of suicide or mental illness, especially during periods of stressful life events or the recurrence of a mental or substance use disorder
- A teen who is especially isolated (e.g., students not able to return to in-person learning due to personal/family illness)
- A teen who is using alcohol and/or drugs, particularly if in isolation and/or as a means of coping with difficult life events
- A teen who is struggling in school (e.g., lack of interest or motivation; dramatic drop in grades; interpersonal difficulties)
- A recent divorce, job loss or other family stressors
- Intolerable loss of face or status (e.g., cyberbullying/bullying)
- Identifying as LGBTQ+, particularly if not accepted by family and/or peers
Here are some recommendations on how to talk to your child:
- Listen, listen, listen. Allow your child to vent about their frustrations, fears, and worries. Maintain good eye contact and convey you are genuinely interested in what they have to say. Give them the opportunity to “get it all out.”
- Ask them to expand on their feelings.
- Work with your child to brainstorm solutions.
- Reframe what they are saying. Summarize and repeat back to them what you heard. For example, if your child is talking about having issues with friends, you can say, “You’ve been getting into quite a number of arguments with them over the past few weeks. It sounds like you’re feeling lonely and frustrated."
Thank you for your role in keeping our children safe and preventing suicides.

School Supply Kit Ordering for 2021-2022
Breakfast/Lunch
Students will be able to take three days worth of food home each day they are here. There is no requirement for them to do so.
Health Needs
Masks are required for all students and staff while in the building. ***Please send an extra mask in a paper bag or baggie for your student to change into a fresh mask if needed, they may then put the used one in the bag to take back home. Mints can be a refreshing way to help students tolerate their masks if they are still working on adjusting to wearing masks.
Hand sanitizer - The district has supplied hand sanitizer and there are automatic dispensers scattered around the building as well as pump dispensers in each classroom. Students may not care for the smell. If your student would like to carry their own hand sanitizer, that is a personal choice you may make.
Daily Health Certification is required for ALL students EVERYDAY they are here in person. If your student’s Health Certification is not completed, it will delay their participation in class. As students arrive we will be checking their status, if the daily certification has not been completed online, they will be instructed where to go and they will not get to go to class until they have had a temperature check and the questions have been completed with staff. The health secretary will be running reports first thing in the morning and sending reminders, the final report will be at 7:45.
Medication and medication authorization forms: I have received some medication authorization forms, but am probably still missing most of them. If your student requires medication at school either on a regular basis or just as needed, please have your physician complete the NEW 2020-2021 Medication Authorization Form as well as Allergy Action Plans or Asthma Action Plans as appropriate for your student. ALL prescriptions or over the counter medication must have an Authorization form on file each school year. Here are the links for the forms you may need. Please note the Medication form is now 3 pages in length and the last page has the areas that require parent initials and signatures.
Eating breakfast will be more important than ever, since students will not be eating while they are at school. Hunger can cause stomach pain or headaches which are Covid-19 symptoms and we would love to be able to keep your students in school and not have to send them home for quarantine.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the PTO?
Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is composed of parents, teachers, and staff working together to better our school and foster relationships throughout the school community.
What do we do?
We assist the school with providing innovative teaching resources for our kiddos. We plan fun events to bring families into the school throughout the year such as the 6th grade ice cream social and the 8th grade dance. We support our teachers and staff with appreciation events. We work with our school administrators to collaborate on school events and help to staff those events.
Who can join?
If you have a child at our school, you can.
Membership fees help to pay for all of the fun events and innovative teaching resources we assist the school with throughout the year. We also host fundraisers to help.
What if I am not able to help at the school, can I still join?
Absolutely. We ask for volunteers throughout the year but there is no minimum requirement to be a member. We’re glad to have your support in whatever form you are able.
Do I have to attend meetings to join?
No. We would love you to be there to help us plan and to provide feedback on the things we are doing, but it is not a requirement of membership.
