STEAM Carnival
The ESC Region XI Service Center has announced an event they are hosting this year called STEAM Carnival. Steam Carnival is a new social amusement platform for all ages that uses technology infused games and immersive hands-on experiences that leverage people's passion for music, fashion, and games to engage them in STEAM: science, technology, engineering, art, and math. This event is for students in grades 4th - 8th grades. Our district will take 125 students to this event (25 from each grade chosen by random draw) on October 19, 2016. We also have 13 Intermediate students working on projects that they will share with other districts at the event. Click the link above to learn more about STEAM Carnival!

No Homework Teacher
Congratulations to Brandy Young, Godley Elementary 2nd grade teacher, who received worldwide attention after her letter to parents went viral. Mrs. Young passed out a letter to all of her students' parents at "Meet the Teacher Night" at the beginning of the school year explaining her new homework policy. (See picture below) A parent posted a photo of the letter on Facebook and it received over 60,000 shares. Brandy gave many interviews with local, national and international television stations; as well as radio and web broadcasts. We support our local celebrity for sharing her views on homework. You can find Brandy on twitter @MrsYoung2nd or her No Homework website:http://www.nohomeworkteacher.com/

Middle School Digital Citizenship Projects
Mrs. Dworsky's 8th Grade Career Portal Projects
The MS Career Portals classes have just finished up a PBL project on credit and debit. Students were required to research and create a presentation explaining how debit and credit cards work and how fees and rewards work within the system. Students were required to call financial institutions to get information on getting a student debit or credit card.
5th Grade Mystery Connection
5th grade teachers Mrs. Barnes and Ms. Wray had fun connecting their classes with other 5th graders this week. Each class asked the other 10 yes or no questions. The goal was to try to guess in what state the visiting class was located. Questions included, "Are you north of the Mississippi River?", "Does your state border an ocean?" Students were given different jobs to help solve the mystery. The Godley 5th graders solved the mystery and learned the class was from Illinois. After the mystery game, the classes engaged in a book discussion over the novel "Wonder", which they were all in the process of reading. Mrs. Barnes did a great job using social media to find a pen pal class studying the same novel to make the connection relate in Social Studies and Language Arts.
