Simile
A simile is a figure of speech that directly compares two things through some connective word, usually being "like", "as", "than".
Example from The Scarlet Ibis: "They named him William Armstrong, which was like tying a big tail on a small kite."
metaphor
A metaphor is a comparison of two unrelated things to make a point.
Example from the Hunger Games. : "I am not pretty. I am not beautiful. I am as radiant as the sun."
personification
A figure of speech in which inanimate objects or abstractions are endowed with human qualities or are represented as possessing human form.
Example from the Hunger Games: "We have to stand for a few minutes in the doorway of the train while the cameras gobble up our images, then we're allowed inside and the doors lose mercifully behind us."

Hyperbole
Hyperbole's are exaggerations to create emphasis or effect.
Example in The Scarlet Ibis: "Doodle was just about the craziest brother a boy ever had."
Alliteration
the repetition of usually initial consonant sounds in two or more neighboring words or syllables.
Example from, The Most Dangerous Game: "Desperately he struck out with strong strokes"
