Notes from the Principal
Over the years, one of the things that we've noticed is that kids often struggle to organize their own games at recess. At younger grades, kids might argue because each person has a different understanding of the rules. At older grades, kids struggle to divide themselves into fair teams--they want a grown up to do it for them. We notice that when an adult starts a game, kids love to play it, but they need us to start it.
As a staff, this struck us as a great opportunity for character education. This year, we're focusing in on recess. While having fun and working up a sweat, we want students to increase their leadership, their ability to include others, solve problems, and their ability to be responsible and respectful with the rules. While these skills are important on the playground, they're also incredibly valuable in the classroom and in the real world.
What might you do to extend this thinking and learning at home?
- Take natural arising opportunities to talk about rules. "What would happen if we didn't follow the rules and stop at the stop sign?"
- If you're playing a family card game, have your child get it set up for you, and remind the players of the rules.
- When watching sports, talk about what makes a "good game"--it's much more fun to have an even match than a blow-out.
- Let your child experience winning and losing, and show them/point out people that do it well, and not so well.
