December 21, 2022 - NEWSLETTER
Westwood Families,
WINTER BREAK has begun. I would rather have a break from winter. The snow and cold continues to find us, so it is important students are dressing for the weather especially on these snowy cold days when the bus may run a couple of minutes behind schedule.
We hope students are wrapping up their work prior to break so they enjoy some time with family, friends, and even a good book.
We’ll welcome everyone back to school on Tuesday, January 3, 2023.
Have wonderful break,
Tom Larson
Principal

Lost & Found donation!
Westwood's lost and found table in the cafeteria has grown in the past few months. We have a large number of sweatshirts, jackets, hats, lunch boxes, water bottles, etc. that are still waiting to be claimed. Please remind your student to look for their missing items as soon as possible. Items that are not claimed by the start of our winter break will be donated on January 3.

Live on 65: Miss Myra and the Moonshiners
Miss Myra and the Moonshiners bring their formidable 5-piece swing band to the Live on 65 stage on January 5 at Spring Lak Park High School. They are the latest to play the Live on 65 performance series that aims to bring world-class entertainment to the North Metro.
Thanks to generous sponsorship from the Spring Lake Park Lion's Club, tickets are priced for the whole family to attend at $12 for adults and $5 for students/children. Purchase tickets online or day-of at the box office.
We recently caught up with Myra Burnette (Miss Myra) to learn more about the band and what Live on 65 audiences can expect. She spoke with us from New Orleans where she is surrounded by guitars, banjos and a sousaphone and playing music with the locals.
Community Education - Westwood After School Activities
Westwood students have been busy this fall with many different after-school activities. Girls Volleyball, Drones, Cooking Club, Pickleball, Fencing, and Archery are just a few of the options that were offered. Look for more classes this winter and spring, register here.

Fur Trade Simulation
The 6C Social Studies class did a Fur Trade simulation. Students took on various important roles from the fur trade era. During the activity, students interacted with fur trade posts to see how they could trade their resources for a list of new items.
Balloon blowing contest
The students in Mrs. Rosengren’s room had a balloon blowing contest. The balloons are quite large and took quite a bit of air to blow them up! This caused a lot of laughter and fun. Adrian blew up the largest balloon, but quite a few of them were large. Lots of kids were out of breath when finished. Students also had a blast popping them.
Algebra concepts
7th grade Red Team students are using Algebra Tiles to help them make sense of algebra concepts. They work as a team to build algebraic expressions.
Bringing Joy
Team 5B brainstormed ideas of people and things that bring joy to our lives.
A proposal on Team 6B!
Ms. Rodriguez is engaged! Students on team 6B were so excited to be a part of Ms. R's proposal. Her boyfriend, Zak, popped the question in the presence of numerous family members on Friday, December 9. The kids were so excited to see this real-life proposal and we are so happy to be a part of it. Thanks to Mr. Larson for arranging the whole experience with the help of teachers on team 6B. We anticipate wedding bells for Ms. R sometime in 2024. All the best to the newly-engaged couple.
What is a Friend?
We are learning about what makes a good friend or bad friend (characteristics of each), how to determine if someone is a friend or an acquaintance, and what gossip is. Students were engaged in the video and helping write down responses from peers.
