Happy New Year!!!

We hope your winter break was relaxing and filled with memories to cherish with family and friends. Our students have transitioned back into their academic routines, and believe it our not, the end of the second grading period is approaching quickly. As always, please be sure to contact your child's teacher should you have any questions about his/her progress. Thank you so much for taking the time and interest to remain involved in your child's education.

Weekly Happenings

This week, we learned that contractions are words that are made by shortening and combining two words. We revisited the decoding strategies we have learned thus far. We studied words that contain the consonant blends "nk" and "ng." We continued our study of poetry.

In social studies, we learned what school was like for children long ago.

In math, we continued our study of money. We practiced counting coins to 99 cents. We learned that we can make the same amount of money using different combinations of coins. Also, we began solving basic money story problems and creating money story problems ourselves! Please continue practicing counting money at home!

In science, we continued our discussion and exploration of soil and its characteristics.

February Family Project!

In February, we will be celebrating all of the friendships we have formed in school this year. As a family project, please find a box (approximately shoe size) and decorate it. Get creative... make your box into a car, cake, rocket ship, etc. Please cut an opening in the top for Valentine's Day cards or candy to be placed inside. Also, make sure the box can be easily opened to retrieve the contents. These decorated boxes need to brought to school on February 12th.

Hats, Scarves, and Gloves

Please label your child's HAT, SCARVES, AND GLOVES with his/her first and last name. These items tend to be left in the gym, classroom, hallway, or on the playground. If items are labeled, they are less likely to be picked up by others and easier to be returned to their rightful owner if left behind or misplaced. Encourage your child to place their hats, gloves and scarves inside their coat sleeves.
