TuHS Construction Update
A message from you principal, Michael Dellerba
Dear Tualatin High School Community,
We wanted to share some updates with our families about the construction that is occurring across our campus. There are several projects that are underway and expected to be completed for the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year, including:
-
● On the north side of our campus, the TECH wing is being expanded to include a new “makerspace” area that will house a new Career and Technical Education (CTE) Pathway opportunity named “Community Design”. Beginning next fall, three classes will be offered in this space: Community Design Seminar, Community Improvement Through Construction, and Geometry By Design, all of which will incorporate project based, hands-on learning, collaboration, with a focus on community improvement as a theme throughout. We look forward to sharing more details with families in the coming weeks as we enter forecasting season.
-
● In the athletics hallway, improvements to both the Mens’ & Womens’ PE / Athletic Facilities are currently underway, and when complete, will also include the addition of a new fitness room. In order for this work to commence, temporary locker room and training room facilities have been constructed in alternate locations, and we appreciate the flexibility of our students and staff during this relocation period.
-
● On the east side of the main building, expansion of the Commons / Cafeteria area is underway that will provide much needed additional student seating capacity.
-
● On the south side of campus, a new centralized administration office and public entrance is taking shape. The progress on this new addition over the last several months can be tracked by watching the time lapse camera that has captured all of the action since September, 2018: https://tinyurl.com/y485y8v8
-
● This summer, in the space that is currently occupied by our main office, construction will begin on a new special education office and accompanying teaching spaces.
-
● One project that was started last summer is already finished: the completion of the turfed, multi-purpose sports field, east of the stadium press box that will provide our PE classes and soccer, lacrosse, and other athletic teams with a year-round surface for teaching, practices and competitions.
In order to facilitate the aforementioned construction, we have needed to make the following adjustments to our facility and programming:
-
● Starting in February and continuing through the end of the school year, the girls locker room will be relocated to the studio theater in the athletic hall way. And, around the first week of March, our wrestling room will temporarily serve as the boys locker room until the start of next year.
-
● The main office staff will relocate to the Faculty Lounge located on the north side of the commons, and the Special Education Office will move into the existing main office, allowing contractors to accelerate their work on the south side of the commons.
As these projects progress, we are making every effort to minimize the impacts to students and staff, and we are thankful for everyone’s flexibility as we adapt and change our daily routines. And, construction progresses, we’ll provide further updates and let families know how things are progressing.
Sincerely,
Michael Dellerba
