HOMESTEAD HEROES
BUCKET FILLING ALL YEAR LONG
Dear Parents,
This is the first of three trimester newsletters. At Homestead, we have been teaching and learning about what it means to be a bucket filler and a good citizen. The teachers and I thought we would highlight for you all the wonderful ways we are helping the children understand how they can have a positive impact on their community. Thank you for your ongoing support in this important endeavor.
Sincerely,
Dr. Suzanne Viscovich, Principal
BEING BUCKET FILLERS In September, Homestead Principal Dr. Viscovich read the book Bucket Filling A-Z to all the kindergarten and first-grade classes to teach them about being Bucket Fillers - kind and caring people who make others feel good. | BUCKET FILLER CLASS BOOKS After the principal's Read Aloud, the first-grade classes made their own Bucket Filler books. Each student writes a page on how to be a Bucket Filler. The students' writings are shared on the morning announcements each day, giving each students author credit! | UNITY DAY In October, Primary School Social Worker, Mrs. Martinez read the book One to all the primary classes to teach them about Unity - working together to be one. |

VETERAN'S DAY In November, students wrote letters to soldiers and veterans to thank them for their bravery and service. These letters were included in packages that were delivered to soldiers by parents. | THANKS-GIVING The first-grade classes collected water bottles for distribution on Thanksgiving. Families in need received the water bottles with a Thanksgiving meal at Blanca's House on Long Island. | SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT In lieu of Thanksgiving Feasts, the first-grade classes participated in a service learning project. Students did chores at home to earn money to buy books, and each created a bookmark. Both were included in holiday gift baskets given to the families of children at Ronald McDonald House for the holidays. |

We bring joy to them during the holiday season, and filling their buckets in turn fills ours! | BUCKET FILLER GARDEN Through a grant from SEPTA, we were able to purchase bulbs for planting. Each child wrapped a written promise of how he/she would fill a bucket around bulb. We planted the bulbs the week before vacation with the help of buildings and grounds and a few parents and our teachers. | TEAMWORK Special thanks to all the wonderful faculty, staff, parents, families, and students at Homestead School for helping support the important concept of filling others' buckets and helping the children internalize this concept! Happy Holidays and Happy 2017! |
