We support and foster a positive community of successful, life-long learners and leaders by meeting the needs of every individual while challenging each one to reach full potential.
Digital Citizenship Course
This past week, October 18-24, was Digital Citizenship week. NEISD is pleased that for the past five school years, NEISD students have completed digital citizenship lessons designed to engage, inform and provide healthy strategies as they utilize a vast array of digital resources for both instructional and social means.
Last May, data from the Clarity BrightBytes survey revealed only 43% of NEISD teachers feel knowledgeable about creating an online presence. Therefore, Executive Staff has approved the creation of a digital citizenship course to be completed by all certified employees. This 60 minute online course will cover the following topics:
- Professionalism online
- Personal branding
- Password creation and security
- Personal safety
- Intellectual property
A 20-question online quiz will be administered at the conclusion of the course. Employees who do not earn a minimum score of 70% will be allowed to attempt the quiz again until a passing score is earned. All NEISD certified employees are expected to complete the Digital Citizenship online course and successfully pass a 20-question quiz by April 1, 2016.
Directions for course registration and access have been emailed. Please contact the Help Desk at 356-4357 for assistance with course access if needed.
Faculty Advisory Committee Feedback
FAC representatives have been asked to solicit feedback from their teams in regards to reducing the amount of time spent in meetings. Please provide feedback via email no later than Wednesday, October 28th. All suggestions will be reviewed and considered prior to implementation of any changes.
The following discussion items were reviewed and/or determined by the FAC and will continue to be implemented:
- Committee chairs have the ability to determine the need to meet monthly (as long as the required number of meetings have been met for those committees that have requirements).
- All staff members are responsible for the information discussed in each committee meeting; please send a representative from your team and review the notes upon an approved absence.
- Please utilize the Communication Request Form to add an event to the Coker Calendar, Wednesday Mail, Marquee and/or Eblast. The latest a communication request can be submitted for processing is by noon on the Wednesday prior to week of the event. This will allows the office to have enough time to add to the bulletin, calendar and other communications avenues.
- The hours have been extended to 7:00 p.m. each day. All staff should close out each day and exit the building no later than this time. In the event you need an occasional time for extended hours, please seek pre-approval from an administrator.
Weather Safety for Schools
As an elementary representative for the NEISD Safety and Security Committee, I had the privilege of hearing a guest speaker, Mr. Paul Yura - Warning Coordination Meteorologist- National Weather Service – San Antonio/Austin Office.
I would like to share a few key points from the presentation that you may find helpful.
Most importantly, if you hear a roar, go indoors. Lightening is nearby and can cause life-threatening injuries.
You may want to consider utilizing the following tools that provide alerts when it comes to weather safety at schools:
- subscribe to wireless emergency alerts on smart mobile devices (settings/notification/emergency alerts)
- download the free The Weather Channel application on a smart mobile device
- bookmark the online National Weather Service link
- take a sneak peek at the All Hazards Alert Radio in the main office (emergency signal sounds whenever an alert is made)

Coker Handbook Tidbits-Food of Minimal Nutrition
Effective August 1, 2003, Federal regulations prohibit student access to certain foods, determined to be of minimal nutritional value, in the public schools at any time or anywhere. In addition to restricted foods, food purchased or brought for students may not compete with the cafeteria, e.g., a pizza party during lunch time.
Schools cannot sell competitive foods during the school day and not until after the KINS food program is over at 3:45 pm. Schools can no longer provide candy to students as a treat or reward.
School approved field trips are exempt from the nutrition policy. In addition, schools may provide one additional nutritional snack per day for students taking the STAAR test.
