New Math curriculum
The new math curriculum that our school is using, Illustrative Mathematics, has math fluency centers. These centers consist of games and puzzles that have pieces that need to be cut and organized. Our math coach, Courtney Farrell, is looking for parent volunteers to help teachers prepare these materials for the upcoming unit. If you are available, please sign up for a date and time to come into the school and help. A suggested "week of" timeframe has been given for each grade level that is about 1-2 weeks out from the next unit. That way we can ensure that all materials are prepared by the time the unit begins. We will continue to send out signup sheets as we progress through the units.
Thanks so much for your consideration! If you have any questions, please reach out to Courtney at Courtney.Farrell@cusd200.org
Collections???
Hi Emerson!
If any of you (or your family members) have any collections at home that you would love to get rid of, feel free to bring them into school. Many of our grade levels will be using "counting collections" throughout the school year, so any collections we have would be put to good use! Also feel free to share this in your newsletter in case any of our families have collections they no longer want. Examples include: buttons, coins, bottle tops, shells, rocks, golf ball markers, beads, etc. They can be turned in to me so I can add them to our growing math manipulatives storage area!
Thanks :) Courtney.Farrell@cusd200.org

LLC information
All District 200 schools have a library learning center (LLC) that contains books that students can check out.
Emerson - At our school, students visit the LLC weekly to check out books with the assistance of the LLC Director and/or their classroom teacher.
You can learn more about Emerson’s LLC by visiting https://www.cusd200.org/domain/2686
Destiny is the library management system used by all District 200 schools. This system is online and accessible to all parents and students through each school’s website. Destiny allows all parents and students to have access to the titles of books available in each school’s LLC. You can access it by going directly to destiny.cusd200.org, clicking through the school website, or from a student’s classlink page. You do not need to be logged in to search the catalog, but students will need to log in for some of the more advanced features. I want to highlight a few features of Destiny available to all students and families.
Students can log in to their Destiny accounts from any device with online access. From there, they can see all books that are checked out to them. They can also put holds on titles that are checked out. Each student can create their own Favorites List to keep track of books they would like to check out.
Steps for creating a favorite list:
Log in to your school’s Destiny catalog using your child’s District 200 login information.
Find and open the record for the book you wish to add to your favorites list.
Click on the three dots toward the right of the screen.
Select “Add to Favorites”
A student’s favorites list is accessible by choosing “My Stuff” at the top of the screen.
"If there are particular titles in our school's collection you don't wish your child to read or are not sure they will make the distinction on their own, reach out to your child's teacher and Kristyn Colon, LLC director
You can learn about Destiny and how to create a favorite list by viewing this video.
From the nurse
Kindness - good for the body, mind and community Kindness is more than behavior. The art of kindness means harboring a spirit of helpfulness, as well as being generous and considerate, and doing so without expecting anything in return. Good for the body Kindness can increase self-esteem, empathy and compassion, and improve mood. It can decrease blood pressure and cortisol, a stress hormone, which directly impacts stress levels. People who are kind tend to be healthier and live longer. Kindness can increase your sense of connectivity with others, which can directly impact loneliness, improve low mood and enhance relationships in general. It also can be contagious. kindness can positively change your brain. Being kind boosts chemicals in the brain that give you feelings of satisfaction and well-being, and cause the pleasure/reward centers in your brain to light up. Endorphins, which are your body’s natural pain killer, also can be released. Simply asking "How am I going to practice kindness today?" can be helpful. Finally, I'd like to leave you with this quote: "Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible." —Dalai Lama
