EAS Principal's Update
October 2, 2020
Fall Picture Days
Thursday, October 8th from 8:00am - 11:30am & 12:00 pm - 4:00pm
Friday, October 9th from 1:00 pm - 4:pm
WHERE
Delaine Eastin Elementary School - outside
All pictures will be taken outside and social distancing requirements will be enforced. Families will need to sign up to a time slot using www.signupgenius.com to schedule a time window. We will do this to limit the number of students coming to campus at one time. Students are encouraged to come on Thursday, October 8th. We want to have the majority of students come on this day. If students cannot make it on the 8th, they can come on October 9th. We will also have the fall re-take day on November 18th.
A representative from Lifetouch will be coming to the school prior to our picture day to determine the best location for setting up to take pictures. Once we have this information, we will send it out to families.
All pictures will be mailed directly to homes, and all ordered will be taken directly by Lifetouch through their payment portal. The school site will only be "hosting" the picture day.
Changes to Attendance
Attendance will still be recorded by our teachers except there will be quite a few more attendance codes being used. Students will still be recorded as PRESENT or ABSENT. In addition, students will be marked for their engagement with instruction, which will be recorded as "Fully Participated", "Partially Participated", or "No Participation". This assessment of engagement does not affect a student's attendance, however, it will provide our teachers, sites, and families with information to support our students who are not fully engaged with daily instruction.
This is a district wide change to attendance. Please see the attached document for more detailed information.
At the elementary level, different periods refer to different parts of the school day. All parts of the school day are required every day of the week.
Period 1 - 90 minutes with your teacher on Zoom
Period 2 - Did you turn in your independent work the day it was assigned
Period 3 - 40 minutes with your specialist class or asynchronous PE
We have a lot of confusion about 2nd period attendance. Independent work is to be done daily, and we are required to mark participation of independent work daily. Students show their participation by doing their independent activities in Seesaw and turning in activities as evidence they participated. We have seen quite a few Seesaw Activities turned in but they have no work shown. This does not show "evidence" of participation and may result in an absence to 2nd period for that day. Parent - please routinely ask to see your students work. Some students have been telling their parents their assignment is "turned in" which means they have pressed the green check box, but they have actually "turned in" the equivalent of a blank piece of paper.
Healthy Families
Child Find
It is the responsibility of the New Haven Unified School District to locate any child in the district who may have a disability, regardless of the severity of the disability. It is also the responsibility of the New Haven Unified School District to evaluate those students to determine if they are eligible for special education or related services under IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act).
If you suspect that your child, at any age, may need an evaluation to determine eligibility for special education services, you may request an evaluation, at no cost, at your child’s school. Please contact the Principal at your child’s school for information about referring your child for an evaluation.
