STEM Summer Offerings

This summer, the STEM team will offer various professional development offerings. Some will be hybrid (synchronous and asynchronous) and some will be asynchronous.

Facilitating Meaningful Mathematics Discourse - Hybrid

This is a blended session with 3 hours of asynchronous work and a 1.5 hour synchronous session. Effective teaching of mathematics facilitates discourse among students to build shared understanding of mathematical ideas by analyzing and comparing student approaches and arguments and by posing purposeful questions to assess and advance students' reasoning and sense making about important mathematical ideas and relationships. Participants will explore the necessary components for a culture of discourse in a mathematics classroom as well as the teacher and student behaviors necessary for successful implementation of classroom discourse.

Project Based Learning Lite - Hybrid

This is a blended session with 3 hours of asynchronous work and a 1.5 hour synchronous session.

Project Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching method in which students learn by participating in real-world, authentic, and meaningful projects. This course is designed to give you a brief overview of what PBL is, why we need to shift our instructional practice, and how to begin to implement PBL in your classroom, both in-person and online.

Foundations of Effective Mathematics Instruction - Asynchronous

This is a 3 hour asynchronous course. Effective mathematics instruction is centered on the foundation of the eight teaching practices, student practices, and beliefs about teaching and learning mathematics. Participants will explore the eight research-based essential mathematics teaching practices, their purpose during instruction, and what they look like through the lens of the teacher and students. In addition, participants will learn about the eight student mathematics practice standards and their function for supporting student learning.

Math Talks - Asynchronous

This is a 3 hour asynchronous course. Math Talks is an extremely powerful tool that can be used no matter what math materials you are using. During this session, participants will dive deeper into the strategy and implementation of Math Talks. Teachers will experience a math talk and explore resources for creating opportunities for math conversations in multiple grade levels.

Book Study: Launch

LAUNCH: Using Design Thinking to Boost Creativity and Bring Out the Maker in Every Student is based on the belief that all kids are naturally creative and that every classroom should be filled with creativity and wonder. It is a top seller on Amazon.com and has been the inspiration for numerous teachers to infuse design thinking into their instruction and classroom. Join us as we navigate through this book and have enriching conversations to transfer ideas from this book into practice. Optional Office Hours are available on June 29th, July 6th, and July 13th from 10:00am-11:00am. This offering will take approximately 10 hours to complete.

Picture Perfect STEM

This workshop is ideal for K-6 elementary, special educators, and librarians who want to integrate STEM and literacy in their classroom or STEM lab. You will build a solid understanding of the 5E model through participation in model lessons and engaging, hands-on learning tasks. By the end of this workshop, you will have the skills, knowledge, and confidence you need to successfully begin implementing Picture Perfect STEM lessons in your classroom! Optional Office Hours are available on July 8th from 11:00am-12:00pm, and July 22nd, August 5th, and August 19th from 10:00am-11:00am. Cost includes the Picture Perfect STEM Manual. Picture Books can be purchased for an additional cost at the time of registration. This offering will take approximately 10 hours to complete.
