Sherburn Hungate Weekly News - Issue 3

Big picture

A word from Mr Broom

It's been another wonderful week at Sherburn Hungate. To see so many children take part in the inter-schools cross country event at Sherburn High School was fantastic.

Thank you also for your wonderful support with the ALDI sticker promotion. I'm delighted to inform you that we have managed to complete not one but two sticker charts, meaning we've doubled our chances of winning £20k of sports equipment for our children. That's amazing!

There's still a few people who need to complete our consent/home-school agreement form. Here's the link if you've yet to do it. http://bit.ly/SHPConsent1920.

Finally, thank you to the parents who brought to my attention the use of foul and abusive language on our school playground. The issue has been dealt with and shouldn't happen again.

Teaching Assistant Vacancies - x2 General Teaching Assistants

We have two exciting opportunities to join our team at Sherburn Hungate. Click the links below for further information. The information is also available on our school website.

Hunting for Materials in Year 1

Yesterday, Year 1 went on a Materials Hunt . They were looking for things made from metal, plastic, wood, paper and fabric. The children really got into searching the school for different objects made from the materials we were learning about!

WB 14.10: Mutual Respect

WB 21.10 : Tolerance of different cultures and faith

A polite reminder for Reception class parents to complete the Reception Health Questionnaire before 1st October 2019. This should take no-longer than 2 minutes to complete. Your School Code is 145821 and click “Find School”. The questionnaire has been designed to inform the Healthy Child Team of any concerns you may have regarding your child’s health and wellbeing.

Cool Milk

Nursery and Reception (under 5) children receive free milk daily. If you would like your child/ren to have a carton of milk at playtime, please register them at www.coolmilk.com . If they are entitled to Free School Meals we can arrange free milk for them, please let the office staff know.

Cycle Event on 27th September - School Closing at 2pm

The World Cycling Championships come to Sherburn on Friday 27th September which is really exciting. The event is due to pass school at around finishing time (3pm) and so that our children can get to see it, and to avoid major congestion, we're closing at 2pm on this day.

Please make arrangements to collect your child at the earlier time. We have also arranged for the Low Mill residential trip to return to school for the slightly earlier time of 2.00pm.

Buddies will remain open as normal.

Thank you.

Staff Shout Outs - If our team do a great job, let us know.

Cross Country a Huge Success

On Thursday, Mr Wooffindin lead the KS2 children to Sherburn High School to compete in the inter-schools cross country championships. You had to be in the top 8 to qualify for the area finals and last year we had 8. This year, it was a different story. The impact of the Daily Mile was clear for all to see as 18 of our children qualified for the finals. Congratulations to everyone and especially to:

Carter Horn, Jacob Wildbore, Eoin Sissons, Zita Szeman, Quinn Edwards, Isaac Harrison, Charlie Gray, Ruben Hewitt-Wood, Sam Taylor, Scarlett Sanders, Lilly Crossley, Eve Butterfield, Poppy Gray, Erin Cunningham, Thomas Marsden, Harley Dixon, Noah Lazenby, Cayden Dixon

Bikes and Scooter Problems

A polite reminder to ask that bikes and scooters are not ridden on the school premises. We've had a few near misses and we want to avoid any nasty accidents. If our Key Stage 2 children wish to come to school on their bikes please ask at the office for a permission form.

Lost Property

We’ve already got several things in the lost property box, all without names. Please make sure you name all items of uniform, PE kit, coats, bags etc, so that we can return them to your children. If your child has misplaced any items of clothing please call in to school to check our lost property box.

Attendance Good this Week!

With an average of 96.5%, our attendance was above the national average this week. Well done everyone and congratulations to Year 2, who are our attendance champions for the second week running!

Seeded areas of the school entrance

You've probably noticed that following the building works outside of the school entrance, there are areas of seeded soil that are starting to take. We kindly ask that children and adults refrain from walking on this area until the grass is fully grown.

Thank you.

Registering Interest for Nursery Places

If you will be considering nursery provision for your younger children in the future please let us know. We review our nursery provision regularly and information on predicted numbers is essential to help with planning. Those on the register are also welcome to come along to the monthly stay and play sessions to meet other families with young children and our local childminders.

Class Dojo

We're delighted to see such a wonderful uptake in our Class Dojo system of letting you know about what's going on in your child's classroom. It's also a super way of communicating with your child's class teacher. We would however ask you to contact the school office in the event of pick up changes or school absence as the teachers may not access to the system regularly throughout the school day.

Thank you for your support with this.

Y6 Parents Only - Secondary School Applications

Y6 parents have recently been sent information regarding applying for a secondary school place for their child. Please remember the final date for parents to express a preference for a secondary school place is 31st October 2019.

School Policy on Sickness/Diarrhoea

If you child suffers from sickness and / or diarrhoea, we try to minimise infection by implementing a 48 hour absence period from school. This begins from the last instance of any symptoms.

Thank you.

Head Lice

It's that time of year when the temperatures start to fall and the warm classrooms kick in. And with it, comes a surge in head lice.

To reduce the spread, we ask that if your child has long hair that it is tied up. Please also check your child's hair regularly and treat any infection in line with the recommendations provided by the treatment.

Census Day Meals

The school census day is next Thursday (3rd October) and a lot of our funding depends on the number of children taking a school meal on that day. We've therefore changed the menu to Hot Dogs, Curly Fries, Coleslaw, Salad, Fruit Jelly or Custard. We'll be giving a sample meal to all KS1 and Reception children even if they bring a pack up. Thank you for your support with this.

Parking Reminder

A polite reminder to be courteous to our local residents when dropping off and collecting your children from school. Thank you.

Free School Meal Applications

If you think your child may be eligible for Free School Meals (even if they are currently in receipt of the Universal Free School Meal provided to children in Reception / Year 1 and Year 2) please ask at the office for a form. The school receives additional funding for each successful application, and you would also be eligible for a voucher towards the cost of any uniform provided through school.
