Judge Schneider Calls for an Expansion of My Brother's Keeper
Harris County is facing an issue on overcrowding and has made plans to build a new juvenile detention center on Chimney Rock Road. The author suggests instead "to confront the reason behind this overcrowding -- too many kids and teens are being jailed for minor violations" and has great statistics to support this reason.
To offset operation costs it was suggested that non-violent youth should bypass detention and be assigned mentors who offer coaching, encouragement and support to keep them from going back to negative behavior patterns. Judge Michael Schneider, one of three who handles juvenile cases at Harris County, "called for an expansion of programs such as the one he helps lead, My Brother's Keeper. These volunteers, many of whom hail from the same communities as the youth they serve, seek to form close trusting relationships with the offenders and to help them turn their lives around."

Campaign for Black Male Achievement Index
According to Citiies United Partner (Campaign for Black Male Acheivement) CBMA's recently released report, Promise of Place: Building Beloved Communities for Black Men and Boys highlights the progress of 50 metropolitan areas and ranks them according to their support of efforts to improve black male achievement through the outcome and opportunities for young black men.
The BMA City Index scores 50 cities that are home to more than 5.5 million Black men and boys, representing more than 30% of all Black men and boys in the United States. The BMA City Index website offers an interactive national map, with detailed scoring data and downloadable scorecards for all 50 cities scored in the BMA City Index, which is featured in the Promise of Place report.
Based on a total of 100 points, these cities were scored using 5 indicators to determine their level of engagement and committed action on behalf of the cities’ Black men and boys. The 5 key indicators measure:
- Demographics around race and gender (10 points)
- City-led commitment to supporting, and addressing individual and systemic challenges facing Black men and boys (30 points)
- Number of local organizations and leaders that are members of the CBMA national network (20 points)
- Local presence of national programs, initiatives, and organizations supporting Black men and boys (20 points)
- Targeted philanthropic funding focused on Black men and boys (20 points)
Houston is currently 48 points with a majority of the points deriving from city-led commitments, taking the My Brother's Keeper Challenge and involvement with Cities United!
