Stanley Switlik Newsletter 11.15.2020
Principal Paul
Dear Switlik families,
Progress reports were posted to Focus this past Friday. Please take this opportunity to review your child’s grades. I also strongly encourage parents to register on the Focus parent portal. It is easy to do; all you need is your child’s student number and birthdate. Please see detailed instructions included further down in this newsletter. For any questions regarding grades or Focus registration, please contact your child’s teacher.
As part of our school improvement plan goal to improve our learning environment through social emotional learning (SEL), students in grades 4 and 5 were invited to complete an emotional health survey. The results of this survey show that our students scored very high in the gratitude domain.
Gratitude is more than just saying thank you, it is a mindset, which helps us celebrate the present, build resilience, and cultivate a higher sense of self-esteem. Practicing gratitude helps up find the positive even in negative situations. When children and adults choose to look for the good in life by appreciating the things we receive, the people who surround us, and the fun activities they get to experience and do, feelings of happiness and joy increase. Positive emotions boost our ability to learn and make good decisions.
It is wonderful to know that despite the challenges these last few months have brought us, our children recognize the importance of gratitude and feel thankful for the things they do have.
Have a great week.
Sincerely,
Christine Paul

Social and Emotional Learning Song of the Week: Disagree Respectfully
Hello! This week I wrote a song called "Disagree Respectfully". Have you ever disagreed with someone?....Of course you have! We all disagree with someone from time to time. Even though we disagree at times, we can learn to disagree respectfully! :) The song talks about three steps you can take in a conversation with someone you disagree with to show you respect them. Here are the steps: 1) Listen to what the other person has to say and keep your cool! 2) Find something positive about what the other person says and reflect that back to them. 3) Tell the other person what you're thinking and come to a compromise. This can be hard to do, but you'll get better with practice!
Second Step Lessons of the Week:
K-1: Its ok for different people to feel differently about the same thing and feelings can change over time.
2-4: Showing Compassion
5: Emotion Management

Nurse's Notes
Here are three basic rules to follow to help keep us all safe and healthy.
- If you are sick with anything, stay home.
- If someone in your house is being tested for COVID, everyone should stay home until you get a negative test result.
- Getting a negative test result does not change your quarantine period.

Let’s get Organized! The ‘O’ in WICOR provides a spotlight on the importance of organization for a successful learner. Organization usually makes us think of physical surroundings but it also relates to our thinking. Organizing information so it makes sense removes the chaos that often impedes a deep understanding and prohibits the ability to apply, implement and recall. It is in this aspect that students are introduced to folder/binders for organizing materials, planners for time management, graphic organizers and note taking for organizing information and their thinking.

Parent Portal
We need all parents to register for parent portal as critical information will be distributed through this secure space. A video and written directions have been provided in this newsletter to register. You will need your child's 44#. If you don't have that, ask your teacher.
The BEs
This year, Stanley Switlik revised our schoolwide expectations to align with the Monroe County School District Expectations. The district's version includes expected behaviors of parents, teachers, and staff. Please review these with your child/ren.
Food Services
Please be reminded that breakfast, lunch, and an evening snack are available for free for all students through the end of this school year. Take advantage of our nutritional program. Here are menus. We will begin sending home food for Thanksgiving Break on Wednesday afternoon. All students are welcomed to take home additional food for home each day on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
Books to Read at Home
I've included directions for checking out books during moderate spread as a photo. The only homework that our school requires is daily reading. Make it fun!
