Successful Summer and Fall Events

We had a great summer of workdays and events, thanks to our Friends and supporters! Photo highlights below.

Rake for the Lake (and River)

This fall we are partnering with the Clean Lakes Alliance on their "Rake for the Lake" Challenge. The aim is to improve overall community participation in leaf management within the Village of DeForest, with the goal of reducing phosphorus runoff. This initiative involves motivating homeowners to voluntarily maintain leaf-free street gutters in front of their properties.

Experts agree that finding ways to keep the leaves on site is the best way to reduce algae problems. One simple solution is to chop leaves up when you mow and leave them on your grass as fertilizer. Or, rake them up and put them around trees and shrubs as mulch. The very same nutrients that fuel uncontrollable plant growth in waterways also make great additive for backyard compost to enrich soil. To facilitate more leaf composting, a compost bin truckload sale will be occurring this Saturday, October 24 at the DeForest Yard Waste Site. Bins will be available for $64.99. Supplies are limited, so residents are encouraged to pre-order at www.rainreserve.com/deforest but can also be purchased on-site as long as supplies last.
