Short Avenue IB Learners Strive to Be...
Mr. Lamb's Updates
Happy Weekend Short Avenue Families and Friends!
This last week was one filled with deep emotions. While the range of feelings are tough to process, our IB principles and values can help guide us during these challenging times.
What makes Short Ave community so special is first and foremost, the people. Our community is committed to supporting our students as they strive to create a better and more peaceful world through an international set of profiles and principles.
The work is not easy, but if we do it well our students will be:
Open-minded and caring communicators who know that they can work together with anyone while caring for all and being open to the varied life experiences and perspectives;
Thinkers who balance inquiry with reflective knowledge because we do not know everything and we will only learn and improve the world by reflecting on what we know, trying to learn more, and thinking through issues with both our experience and our new understanding;
Principled risk takers who can speak up and advocate for themselves and others when things are not right, even when it is challenging and not comfortable;
Balanced in their lives, knowing that only with sound bodies and minds will we be able to be change agents now and in the future
Our school is not perfect. Nor is my staff. Nor am I. There will always be room for growth and learning. What we have is a community of learners and educators engaged in a process that we are consistently working to make better. Remember from Don Quixote - “it is the journey, not the inn, that matters.” We are together in this process and I am excited from what I see and have experienced with our village; that we are working, pushing, and striving together for the common good.
As always, please be safe. And please enjoy the rest of your weekend.
See you Monday!

Siblings for 2024/25 School Year:
Do you have a younger sibling at home who you would love to come to Short Ave next school year? We are starting a SIBLING LIST, and ask that you please fill out this Google Doc, so that we have you all in one place! This list is for both our current neighborhood families with younger siblings, and our families on permit with younger siblings. To be eligible for TK/UTK, children need to have birthdays between September 2, 2019 and September 1st, 2020.
Please know that we have become VERY popular with our resident neighborhood families, and expect that Kindergarten for 24/25 will be very full. Resident neighborhood families are guaranteed a spot. But we do not know if we will have spots in Kindergarten for siblings on permit. We do anticipate being able to take siblings for TK from our current families on permit, but will most likely delay enrolling siblings until later in the spring when we have a better sense of our numbers. This is a change from last year, when we enrolled siblings in March with our neighborhood families.
Current Short Ave families do not need to take a tour, and we kindly ask that you leave tour spaces for new families. All enrollment and tour info is now on our website. For those families with friends who want to tour Short Ave, the tour RSVP will open November 1st, when a google doc to sign up will be on our school website. Families on permit with younger siblings will be at the top of the waitlist and will have priority over new families trying to enroll to Short for the first time.
If you have questions about this, please reach out to me at firstname.lastname@example.org
reDiscover Holiday Camps:
reDiscover will have one day tinkering camps on November 10th, 20th, 21st, and 22nd
Come build amazing eco-friendly creations with us! Tinkering Camp teaches children the skills they need to turn their wildest imaginings into robust items made from cardboard, wood, plastic, metal, and fabric. Link to register.
Please see the flyers below for an event exploring LA's biodiversity, and helping your child be college ready:)
