dunning dash & multicultural fair
The Dash is at 9:00 am. The Active website to register for the Dunning Dash can be confusing. Here is a paper registration form if you would prefer. Our numbers are low so if you are thinking about registering for the Dash, do it today! If you do it online, click "no thank you" on the last page to avoid the active membership. (this is not our website, but the timers website - we have no control) OR send in your paper registration today!
The Multicultural Celebration will take the form of a brunch directly after the Dunning Dash. We need volunteers to bring food to share, to set up during and directly after the Dunning Dash, to help serve food, and to clean up. As always, if anyone is interested in doing a song or dance that represents your family's culture, doing henna tattoos, face painting, or another activity, the more the merrier! Use this link for the SignUpGenius.
Understanding Counting and Cardinality
Lauren Walton, Mathematics Coach
By age 5 children start to understand the relationship between numbers and quantities. We often see children keeping track of objects that have and have not been counted. One to one correspondence is the ability to match an object to the corresponding number and recognize that numbers are symbols to represent a quantity. It is a fundamental skill for developing an understanding of numbers.
By the end of Kindergarten, some of our goals for students are for them to be able to (1) know number names and the count sequence; (2) count to tell the number of objects; and, (3) compare numbers.
Here are some ways you can practice counting, 1:1 correspondence, and comparing numbers at home and on the go.
Have your child count objects regularly and pose easy counting challenges, such as counting the number of steps on a flight of stairs or the number of red cars you see while driving.
Tell your child you are going to count to a number (start with 5) and each time they say a number, they will clap their hands. Model this first by counting from 1-5 and clapping once for each number you say.
Roll the dice and then go forward the corresponding number of spaces on a board as a race to the end. Google “board game templates” for some free, printable board games!
Scatter the counters on a flat surface and have your child count the total number of counters. A variation of this is to use two-colored counters and have your child count how many of each color. You can also turn this into a story problem!
Let us know how it goes at lwalton33@framingham.k12.us.ma - we’d love to hear from you!

MCAS
Even though this assessment is a snapshot, one single perspective, it is important that students feel confident and as prepared as possible. There are many ways in which you can help your child put his/her best foot forward on the day of the test. The following guidelines can help set our students up for success:
The night before the test:
- Make sure your child goes to bed on time so he or she is well-rested.
- Keep your routine as normal as possible. Upsetting natural routines may make children feel anxious or unsure of him/herself.
- Be positive and confident knowing your child will do his/her best.
- Plan ahead to avoid conflicts on the morning of the test.
The morning of the test:
- Electronic devices are not allowed during testing time. It is recommended that students leave all cell phones and electronic watches/devices at home.
- Get up a few minutes early to avoid rushing and make sure your child arrives to school on time.
- Have your child eat a nutritious breakfast (or encourage them to eat when they get to school).
- Have your child dress in comfortable clothes.
- Be positive and communicate that this is your child’s chance to show what he/she knows. The most important thing is they try their very best!
Thank you for your continued support!

CARE & SHARE
The Jane Shapiro Care and Share began in 1995 as a Dunning School community service project. Each month a specific food item is collected at the school to help keep A Place to Turn's shelves stocked. What a great sharing and learning project! Donations are gathered up by the students and then with help from staff, they are delivered to A Place to Turn. Learn more about A Place to Turn here.
Thank you for your contributions to A Place to Turn during the year. Our monthly food collection makes a huge difference in our community, while teaching our students the importance of giving.
