Dear Highline Family,
We understand the importance of having our students go outside to play and get fresh air, which is why we go outside for recess every school day regardless of the weather unless it is extremely cold or there is precipitation. If the weather is under 20 degrees or the windchill is under 20 degrees, we will stay indoors. Otherwise please expect students to go outside for 15 minutes of recess. Please have children wear appropriate clothing and shoes for recess. In order to play in the snow, students must be wearing snow boots, gloves, snow jacket and snow pants. Thank you for your support and partnership.
From Nurse Maddie
Hi Highline Families,
Can you please send in or email your student's most recent vaccination records to the health clinic. It is important that your students vaccinations are up to date and that we have the most current records of their vaccinations. If you have any questions about your students vaccination records, please feel free to reach me at mhamman@cherrycreekschools.org OR call the clinic at 720-7474-2307. Thank you for your partnership!
Sincerely,
Nurse Maddie
Second Step Social Emotional Learning Curriculum
Last month, our school wide theme was empathy. Our students have been learning to have empathy, identify their own and others’ feelings, notice and respect same and different feelings, and show compassion. Compassion involves saying kind words or doing something helpful to show you care how another person feels. When students can identify, understand, and respond in a caring way to how someone else is feeling, it helps create a positive and accepting school climate.
As we head into December our next school wide theme is emotion management. During our classroom community talks we prompt students to notice their own feelings by paying attention to clues in their bodies, and we will remind them to use their Second Step skills to calm down:
- Stop—Use your signal
- Name your feeling
- Calm down: Breathe, count, use positive self-talk
These skills help students calm down strong emotions when faced with learning and social challenges, which helps them succeed academically and get along well with others.
Second Step lessons specifically teach about calming down strong emotions such as anger, disappointment, frustration, and anxiety.
Please tell your child’s teacher if you have questions about how you can help your child learn to identify feelings, show empathy and compassion, or ways to calm down at home.
