SHS Green Apprentice students are studying the food system of Swampscott and are seeking input from the community. The students are targeting food waste and would like to request that residents and business owners of Swampscott and Nahant take a brief survey to provide us data on how food waste is being dealt with in town.

This survey will be used to help students in Swampscott High School’s Green Apprentice class to determine how Swampscott and Nahant residents are dealing with food waste in their homes. All information gathered will help us decide the next best steps on how to make a change in Swampscott’s local food system and how to make the community more sustainable.

COLLEGE VISITS: FOR SENIOR STUDENTS
Admissions reps from over 75 colleges are coming to SHS to see YOU. The list of scheduled visits is on Naviance and posted in the Guidance suite. This is an awesome opportunity for you to meet with admissions officers from schools you are interested in, get to know more about the school, programs, campus organizations, etc. Perhaps the most crucial element to these visits is that the admissions officers who come are usually the ones who read and make decisions on your application. So, this is your chance to make a strong first impression, have your questions answered, and engage with the admissions team!!! See Mrs. Brown for a pass. Visits will take place in the guidance office.

Seniors,
We are noticing that some of you are having writer's block with the common app essay.
Try not to overthink this essay. Remember: this is the one opportunity to show them who you are. After we read it, we should be able to tell it's YOU and not anyone else. Although we do not require it, we give you the chance to review your essay with your counselor who will give you honest feedback. Even if you have already shared with an English teacher for advice, please do strongly consider sharing with us as our perspective is more informed from the admissions side.
Here is a link from Johns Hopkins- "Essays that Worked." that might help you think about the essay in a different way.

SHS Counseling staff welcomes students in grades 9-12 to participate in the girl's lunch group.
PSAT Registration: Grades 10 and 11
Students may now register for the PSAT exam. The PSAT is good practice for students in grades 10 and 11. Student PSAT scores from junior year will automatically be included in the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
The PSAT will be given on Saturday, October 19, 2019 at 8:00 am at Swampscott High School.
The fee for the exam is $35.00 and payments are made online through UNIPAY.
To pay online: Go to the SHS district website, under the resources tab, select families, and pay fees online. You will be directed to the Unipay site, select Swampscott and click on Exams High School.
Please be sure to include the student's name, grade and PSAT in the memo. Students can pick up a PSAT Student Guide from Mrs. Brown in the guidance office or click here for the online version. The deadline to register is October 11th; we cannot guarantee a seat for students registering after the deadline as we will need to secure the appropriate number of proctors.
