CAFE Canada & Centralization Plans
https://www.smore.com/fwwvg-cafe-canada-centralization-plansMessage from CAFE Vancouver Island President, Andy Spurling
In December 2014 CAFE Canada advised the chapters across Canada that the National Board had decided by resolution to proceed with centralization of the organization by assuming control of the Chapters. The centralization program would see all Chapter revenue directed to CAFE Canada, with the local CAFE boards then serving in only an advisory capacity. Any Chapter plans and proposals for each year, along with corresponding budget requests, would then require approval from CAFE Canada and our Managing Director would report directly to them.
The core of their reasons to centralize are based on their view that centralization would contribute to membership growth, added visibility through a national marketing campaign, greater access to sponsorship dollars, a consistent brand and enhanced consistent programming across the country. The plan is reliant on funding from anonymous benefactors that require centralization as a pre-condition to their agreement to advance funds to help meet these goals.
CAFE Canada is currently meeting with the chapters across the country READ MORE

CAFE Vancouver Island Family Business Profile
BOORMAN’S REAL ESTATE
Harry Boorman founded Boorman’s in 1933 and today his great grandson, Mike Boorman (pictured at right), continues as a fourth generation family member, having joined the business eighteen years ago. As a Realtor and manager he works alongside his uncle Keith (President), his brother Dean, (Realtor), and his father Ian. Their real estate and sales are primarily residential with some commercial clients, while the property management division deals with strata and rentals.
How did their business last four generations? Mike’s advice for family businesses is to establish roles, job descriptions, and responsibilities early. He views good communication as a key to ensuring a successful multi-family business. As important is the acknowledgement that family and work roles have to be in balance.
The Ultimate PAG Retreat
Our PAG was very privileged to spend our October retreat at Nimmo Bay Wilderness Resort, a family business and CAFE member, owned by the Murray family. The resort was recently named by National Geographic as one of the best unique wilderness lodges in the world, an honor shared by only one other Canadian resort. How lucky are we to have Fraser Murray as a PAG member.
Driving to Port McNeil in a wind storm on the weekend started with a bit of a glitch as Fraser was unable to pick us up since the seas were too rough. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise as the six of us were taken to the resort by helicopter affording us all of a bird’s eye view of this magnificent part of our province.
We spent the weekend sharing so many experiences and growing as a team. Activities included a highly successful halibut fishing trip, hiking in a true west coast rain forest, yoga and an enjoyable visualization class. Our PAG meetings were sometimes spent in the hot tub next to the waterfall that increased greatly in size over our stay due to an abundance of rain.
The food prepared by the chefs was absolutely delicious and family style meals were a great way to visit and build PAG bonds. Entertainment by the Murray family and a campfire on the dock all added to our experience. Though none of us were in a hurry to leave this piece of heaven on earth, our trip back to Port McNeil made our weekend complete with two outstanding whale encounters.
