A Letter from the Principal
As we wrap up the first quarter and welcome more students back on campus, I want to thank you for your continued support and flexibility. Teachers have been working hard to ensure that each child is successful, and we are really excited to get started in Quarter 2 to see even more progress.
Parent involvement is still one of our top priorities, even if it may look a little different this year. Read some of the conversation starters below that you can try with your child to learn more about what is happening during their school day.
"Describe a book you enjoyed today."
This gives you an idea of what your youngster prefers to read. Then, build a daily reading habit by asking what she or he would like to read tonight. Encourage reading skills by reading aloud to him or her and letting them to read to you.
"Show me what you have for homework."
It's your child's job to do his or her homework, but you play a role, too. Make sure he or she knows what they are supposed to do by having her explain the assignments to you. After they finish their homework, glance over their work to see that it's complete.
"Tell me what you learned that you'd like to know more about."
Use your child's interests as a jumping-off point for activities to share. If he or she likes geometry, you might hunt shapes together. If she's fascinated by how animals adapt to winter, read a book or observe animals outside.
Asking "How was school today?" might not get you far. Instead, ask questions like these for a better picture of your youngster's day:
- What's the coolest thing that happened today?
- What made you laugh?
- What was the most creative thing you did?
- How were you kind of helpful today? How was someone kind to you?
- Tell me about the best part of your day.
- What was the hardest thing you had to do today?
- What made you feel proud?
We appreciate the conversations you have with your child about their education each day. These conversations help students to realize how important school is, and it gives you a chance to celebrate the progress your child is making regularly. Thank you again for your continued support!
Warmest Regards,

November Counselor's Corner:
Happy November Mike Davis Stars! Can you believe we are already starting the 2nd quarter of school?! What a fun year it has been so far. As we look back over the last few months of school there is so much to be grateful for. Did you know that practicing daily gratitude has scientific benefits? People who regularly practice gratitude by taking time to notice and reflect upon the things they're thankful for experience more positive emotions, feel more alive, sleep better, express more compassion and kindness, and even have stronger immune systems! My challenge for you and your student this month is to have “an attitude of gratitude” take a few minutes each day as a family to write down or say three things you are grateful for! Nothing is too small to recognize and be grateful for, it can be something as small as being grateful for your morning coffee or a hug! Have your student reflect at the end of the month with you about how practicing daily gratitude has impacted them this month. Be sure to tell them if you have noticed positive changes in them as well! I can’t wait to hear what all my Stars are grateful for!

MDE Math Connection at Home
As we start the second quarter or school, here are some concepts/ ideas you can work on with your student at home. There are links for short videos to help families understand and practice concepts being taught at school. Keep an eye out for a virtual math parent make-n-take event happening in December for all families. A flyer will be coming home in November with more details.
Kindergarten
Practice counting and writing numbers 0 to 5. Jack Hartman has a great Subitize up to 5 song to help kids practice. You can view it at: https://collierschools.instructuremedia.com/embed/b8c82c79-aa74-452b-82ad-cd6561085dac Students should also practice solving addition and subtraction problems within 5 (example 5-3=2, 2+2=4 ).
1st Grade
Continue to work on addition and subtraction fact recall with numbers under 20. Challenge students to find missing parts of an equation. (Example: 12- ___=8, 5 +____=16) . Students are also learning related facts and how to connect addition and subtraction. Ask show them an equation such as 8 + 6 = 14and challenge them to write 2 related facts using addition or subtraction( 14 – 8 =6, 6 + 8= 14, 14- 6=8 answer must contain the same numbers to be a related fact). Here is an example of how to find fact families (related facts) using triangles: https://collierschools.instructuremedia.com/embed/49221f60-fcc7-4944-8558-17559d3694e3
2nd Grade
Practice reading, writing and showing (with tens, ones, and hundreds) numbers to 1,000. We are also learning about coins this quarter. Have students identify coins by name, how much they are work, and practice adding up the total of a group of coins. Here is a Khan Academy video to help review coin counting: https://collierschools.instructuremedia.com/embed/e6891669-6307-4095-b732-9e63ddf27869
3rd Grade
Please continue to practice multiplication facts up to 10. Students can access fact practice games on their laptop computers using Fastt Math or Xtra Math apps in their canvas. They can also practice along with these fun songs to learn their facts: https://collierschools.instructuremedia.com/embed/1a896a11-548b-4912-a9b4-86d30cf461a2
4th Grade
Students are working on becoming more efficient with multiplying using partial product or an area model. Khan Academy has a great video to help families understand the area model: https://collierschools.instructuremedia.com/embed/acd3c009-91c4-40c5-b782-d49de10a6b67
Students are also learning how to divide using partial quotient, or Big 7. Here is a Khan Academy video to help understand this concept better: https://collierschools.instructuremedia.com/embed/272accc2-dffd-4cd8-a4c4-567b0c05e7ec
5th Grade
Students are working on fractions this quarter. They will add and subtract fractions with different denominators. Here is a great video from Khan Academy to help students and parents understand this process: https://collierschools.instructuremedia.com/embed/aa3865f0-ab2e-43f9-966d-45eeaa0d226b
