Kingdom of Ghana

Ghana is located in the Upper Niger river valley, between the Sahara and the tropical forests by West Africa.


Ghana was a Monarchy and they relied on an army of thousands of men who protected the kingdom.


The majority of the people in Ghana were farmers. Ghana was successful because of all the supply of iron ore and gold. Gold was the most traded item in Ghana. They traded gold for metal goods, textiles, horses, and salt. Also people of Ghana were very skilled in making weapons using iron ores. After some time, Ghana started to trade ivory, ostrich feathers, hides and slaves.

The Collapse

Ghana developed immensely for several hundred years, eventually, the kingdom was destroyed by the wars and shortage of natural resources. The kingdom finally collapsed during the 1100's when a rival kingdom took over Kumbi.
