RAP-Rochester After School Program at John Adams Middle School
RAP is Rochester After-School Program. This program runs Tuesday through Thursday beginning October 23rd and ending April 25th from 2:40-4:40 pm. Students meet in the cafeteria, eat a small meal, then go to teacher-guided activities in a classroom. RAP is intended to provide support in reading, math, and include an enrichment with a social-emotional component. A late bus arrives at approximately 4:45 pm daily. This bus does not drop students at their homes, but within walking distance if they are regular bus riders. If you are interested in having your student in RAP please contact your student’s advisory teacher to request a form. You may also be contacted if your student’s teachers think they would benefit from RAP.
What is Vaping?
Two resources for your information are included in this newsletter. One is a fact sheet for parents from the Surgeon General and the other is a short video regarding risks of Vaping.
AVID program seeking 6th graders
Does your sixth grader dream of a college education? Is academics a high priority? Is your child highly motivated to succeed? Consider AVID, a system of organization, inquiry, and collaboration with peers that support students academically, emotionally and socially. Through classroom strategies and the AVID elective, AVID students are better prepared for both high school and college.
On October 10th, Mr. McRae, our AVID Coordinator and Teacher, will hold assemblies for all 6th graders to explain AVID, the application process and next steps. The assembly with be videotaped and posted on YouTube for interested parents. We will send the link via Skylert and on our Twitter page @JohnAdamsMS1.

Truancy
Attendance is an essential component to a student’s academic success. It is important to John Adams Middle School to work with families in order to address concerns about attendance. If your child is absent, please call the attendance line at (507) 328-5710.
Parents are notified through an automated message about students’ tardiness and absences for the day. Please contact the office at (507) 328-5700 to correct the absence or tardy or if you have any questions. It is essential that the students understand the value of attending all classes on a daily basis in order to prevent a pattern of unexcused absences that will impact his or her education. Continued unexcused absences will result in the following intervention procedures as outlined in the Rochester Public Schools Student Behavior Handbook.
· If a student has between three and five unexcused absences, a letter is mailed to the student’s parent or guardian.
· After a fifth unexcused absence, the student and his or her parent or guardian is invited to attend a parent information meeting with a representative of the Olmsted County Attorney’s Office. During the parent information meeting, the family will be advised of why the student should attend school and the legal consequences associated with continued absences. RPS will work with families to develop specific interventions to address attendance issues following the parent information meeting.
· If a student continues to have unexcused absences after the parent intervention meeting, the student and his or her parent or guardian will be invited to participate in a Student Attendance Review Team (“SART”) meeting to develop a contract designed to improve the student’s attendance with a representative from the Olmstead County Attorney’s Office.
· If the student continues to have unexcused absences after the SART meeting, RPS will work with the Olmsted County Attorney’s Office to initiate appropriate legal proceedings, such as a Child in Need of Protection or Services (“CHIPS”) petition based on neglect or truancy
The staff at John Adams Middle School strives towards working with parents to link the home and school connection. The staff is dedicated to working with parents.
Friday After School Work Time for students who are tardy or missing class
Attendance and being on time are habits of success. As students prepare to become college and career ready we want to help them set these habits. When students are tardy to classes or skip classes this impacts their academic performance. They miss instruction and get behind on their assignments. To help avoid this, students that have 5 or more unexcused tardy to class or 3 unexcused absences in one week will be assigned to Friday after school work time to complete their missed work. If they come without their work they will be expected to read and may be assigned an additional after school on the next Friday.
Parents will be contacted if their student is assigned to Friday After School Work Time. We will have our first after school work time on Friday, October 26, 2018.
