Celebrating Diversity
Exploring our Diverse Identities
We believe that diversity is a beautiful thing that should be explored and celebrated in our school and classrooms! After we understand our own identities, we can look at ways that they may overlap with others' identities and experiences. It takes an open mind and humility to appreciate these.
"Humility is critical when learning about diversity because it pushes us to recognize that our own ideas and opinions are only part of the story and that other people may have access to pieces of the puzzle that we don't know about."
Please watch this video for an opportunity to share and explore the amazing identities that make up the Vista Oaks community. I genuinely hope that our students will share their own Identity Boxes so we can examine and celebrate them. Videos can be emailed to estella.freeman@vistaoaks.net Thank you!
Mental Health Moments
Here's a great strategy shared by our School Psychologist, Katie Hoellwarth.
Mindful Listening
Find someplace to sit or lay down quietly for several minutes and listen to everything around you. Attempted to focus on any noises you hear. Silently name anything you can hear. Attempt mindful listening in different locations in your house and compare the sounds.
We'd love to see pictures and videos of you learning from home!
Speak Up for Safety!
We love when our students are able to share concerns with us directly, but having an anonymous option is really helpful for some! We have a safety line in place for this.
STUDENTS CAN EASILY AND CONFIDENTIALLY REPORT THE FOLLOWING SITUATIONS:
- BULLYING
- PEERS IN CRISIS
- PLANNED FIGHTS
- THREATS OF VIOLENCE
- OTHER URGENT SITUATIONS
