What and Where?

Seawater inlet of the Indian Ocean, lying between Africa and Asia.


The name of the sea may be because of the seasonal blooms of the red-coloured 'sea sawdust' near the water's surface. It may also be called the Red Sea because Red is said to be south, and Black as in the Black Sea to be North.

Earliest known exploration was by the Egyptians.

Was formed by Arabia being split by the Red Sea Rift.

Living Resources.

The Red Sea has a rich and diverse ecosystem. It has over 1200 species of fish, 10% of which isn't found anywhere else in the world.


The Red Sea is part of the sea roads between Europe, the Persian Gulf, and East Asia, and because of this has hevy shipping traffic. Piracy occurs mainly to the south of the sea. There are 7 groups of security enforcement agencies on and around the Red Sea.


The Red Sea is known for its recreational diving sites, that showcase shipwrecks and beautiful reefs.

Bordering countries

The Red Sea is bordered by Saudi Arabia and Yemen on the Eastern shore, and Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea, and Djibouti on the Western shore.
