Red River Campaign

Because of the French threat in Mexico Abraham Lincoln wanted to raise the federal flag over some parts of Texas. The campaign was to be a joint Army-navy, with Major General Nathaniel p. Banks in charge of the Army and David Porter controlling the Navy's gunboats.The Union had already captured several pointa by this time .

Approximately 1,200 men prepared to defend their land against about 3,000 men. The first battle was fought in 1874. Many men registered at the reservations, but 4,000 other men-mainly three tribes didn't. Some of these regestrations were near canyons and valleys in the panhandle. The main target for this campaign was the Capital of Confederate, Shreveport.
