Dear Allgrove Parents,
New School Security Measures: By now many of you have seen and experienced the new interior door at our front entrance. The construction was completed over the February break. In case you are not familiar with how to operate the door, you will need to press the button located to the left of the door in order to be buzzed into the building. Please remember to look up at the camera so the office staff can see who you are. Thank you for your patience as we all become accustomed to this additional layer of building security. Just a quick reminder, all visitors must report to the office before proceeding to any other part of the building. You will need to sign in and get a visitor badge. The office may also call the classroom teacher to ensure they are ready for your visit. Thank you for your cooperation.
This week our first graders had a fabulous experience when they visited the Bushnell Theater to watch a production of “Elephant & Piggies’, We are In a Play” which was based on one their favorite book series, Elephant and Piggie, written by Mo Willems. Prior to attending the performance, the children had done an author study of Mo Willems books. The play received rave reviews from both children and adults alike. They loved seeing the characters leap off the pages of the books they have read and onto the stage. Children commented they wished the play had started again after it was over. An opportunity like this encourages the children to notice the connections between books and other literary art forms. We thank the PTO for supporting this enriching learning experience.
Mr. Dutton, our physical education teacher, is in the process of assembling a team of second graders to help with planning our June field day. We want to provide the children with an opportunity to take some responsibility to be involved in the planning as well as in sharing information with their classmates and working with the adults to make some decisions about the activities leading up to and including the fun events of the day.
The schoolwide Math Fact Fluency project is in full swing. The number of math facts the children know each day is growing by the 100’s. You will see the colored chains hanging from bulletin boards outside classrooms along with place value charts depicting the total number in a different way. This project supports the children in developing automaticity of math facts as well as deepening their understanding of the place value representation of larger numbers.
Coming up next week our kindergarteners kick off a Social Studies unit on Geography, Recycling and a Clean Earth with a visit the Trash Museum at the Materials Innovation and Recycling Authority (MIRA). The children will learn about where trash goes and how recycling works. It is an engaging and interactive learning experience.
Through the many online contributions made on behalf of the students at Allgrove School, our “JUMP ROPE for HEART” project has raised $4155.00 so far. The deadline for returning the envelopes has been extended to Monday, March 28th. Every day the children proudly wear their lanyards with the Heart Hero Pups they have collected.
Finally, just a couple of calendar reminders:
Thursday, 3/24 is an Early Release day for students
Friday, 3/25 NO SCHOOL
Enjoy the weekend,
Sincerely,
Maylah Uhlinger
