George Couros put the above quote on his blog and had this to say.....
What if the “critic” that is being referred to is me? What if the loudest voice of criticism is in my head, to the point where the “critic” wins the argument against the person trying to get in the arena?
Many people that we aspire to be like are waging this battle all of the time, whether we know it or not. We see them as “high achievers,” but they are struggling with that battle, and when they show vulnerability in their struggle, we see ourselves in their process.
From Brene Brown:
“Vulnerability is the last thing I want you to see in me, but the first thing I look for in you.”
Dealing with the critic in your head is okay. It happens to all of us. But when we try something new (or even consider it), identify that the critic in your head could be the same person that is holding you back from getting into the arena in the first place. We wouldn’t give that power to someone else, so push against those self-criticisms that do not allow us to become what we are meant to be.
I think George is right....we are many times our harshest critic and our biggest stumbling block as we try something new and it is the same for our students! We need to talk to our students about this inner critic which takes away their power through negative self-talk and making them doubt their abilities and to not let it have that power!

Science Standards
As I mentioned at the end of today’s training, there is a new Schoology group for Collierville Schools science teachers, CS Science Teachers. In that group, you can find under the Resources tab a growing number of great resources, including:
- A Framework for K-12 Science Education: Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ideas (the entire book in PDF form)
- Current TN Science Standards
- Current Collierville Schools Scope & Sequence Documents
- The NEW TN Science Standards for 2018-2019 (broken up by grade/course)
- The NEW TN Science Standards Reference document
- A link to the Memphis Area Science Teachers (MAST) website
- …and more.
Be sure to check back from time-to-time; the body of resources will grow as we get closer to implementing the new science standards.

Professional Development Points Guidance
Audience: Directors of Schools, HR Personnel, Principals, Educators
Contact: Educator.Licensure@tn.gov
In January 2017, the State Board of Education updated the professional development portion of the Educator Licensure Policy 5.502. These updates include how and when professional development points (PDPs) can be accrued, how they are submitted for approval, and who approves PDPs for the purpose of renewing or advancing an educator’s license. A table with the number of points awarded for various activities can be found in the Frequently Asked Questions for Educators and Frequently Asked Questions for Administrators documents.

The application, located here, is now open and will close on March 16 at 11:59 p.m. CT. RTI2 Report Release
Audience: Directors of Schools, Principals, Educators
Contact: Laura.Booker@tn.gov
In 2014, Tennessee launched Response to Instruction and Intervention (RTI2) to better support students’ individual learning needs. The department’s newest research report, Assessing Progress: Four Years of Learnings from RTI2 Implementation in Tennessee, offers a moment of reflection—a chance to look across several years of implementation of a statewide framework to determine the right next steps.
Furthermore, the report provides an opportunity to take greater ownership of the department’s mission of continuous improvement so that, rather than pivoting from solution to solution, we improve current initiatives by building on progress and learning from areas of need. View the full report here.
The report follows on the heels of Governor Haslam's unveiling of his proposed budget, which proposes $13.3 million in funding for positions dedicated to implementing RTI².
