Big picture

FALL VDOE Growth Assessments

This past year, the Virginia General Assembly passed legislation §22.1-253.13:3 changing the way schools measure learning for elementary and middle school students in reading and math. Previously, students completed a single Standards of Learning test to measure academic performance at the end of the school year. With this new legislation, students in grades 3-8 will take new SOL growth assessments this fall in addition to traditional spring SOL tests. For the 2022-23 school year, the state will add midyear growth assessments. This will allow parents and teachers to see how students progress throughout the year in reading and math.

The state requires that all students in grades 3-8 take the fall growth assessments in reading and math with the exception of middle school students enrolled in algebra or geometry. All students will take traditional SOL tests this spring for reading and math; selected grade levels will also take science, social studies and/or writing SOL tests at the end of the school year. The purpose of fall testing is to identify the starting point of each student’s learning for the new school year; there is no reason for students to prepare or study for the fall test in any way. The fall growth assessments and spring SOL tests are computer adaptive, and they will use similar types of questions. Fall tests will be shorter, and test questions will be based on the previous grade level’s content. The state also requires that all students test at school under the supervision of school staff, so no remote testing options will be available.

Your child is scheduled to take the new SOL growth assessments during the weeks of Sept. 20-Oct. 8. Please see the FCMS Testing Calendary for these assessmets above. You can help by ensuring that your child arrives at school promptly on the testing days with plenty of rest the night before and a good breakfast that morning.

Thank you for your continued support of FCMS!

STUDENT ATTENDANCE IMPORTANT INFORMATION

(there is no timeframe for acceptance) While waiting for your child to gain acceptance in to VLA, he/she is counted as absent from school. Your child should complete assignemnts posted on his/her teacher's CANVAS page. There are no google meet links this year for joining our in-person classes. Teachers are teaching students in-person only this year.

According to CCPS attendance guidelines, a child not attending school in-person due to parent choice while waiting for VLA Acceptance, (PCA), is counted as an excused absence. After 10 of these absences, he/she will be withdrawn from Falling Creek Middle School and maybe considered truant.

STUDENTS QUARANTINING (Q)

Students quarantining have been provided a return to school date. This information is also noted in our student attendance system. Quarantined (Q) student absences will count as an excused absence as well. student sare to complete teacher assignments in CANVAS. Completion of assignments posted on their teacher's CANVAS page ARE FACTORED into their 9-weeks grades in their classes~ the completion of these assignments does not impact attendance.

Outside of waiting for VLA Acceptance and Quarantine, according to the Attendance Policy 4020 (revised June 2018) parents may notify the school of their child’s absence by phone, email, or written note. Therefore, if a parent gives a reason that is excused under CCPS policy over the phone or on email, the school does not need to wait for a note to then mark it excused in Synergy.

FCMS COVID-19 Exposure Protocol & Procedures

WHEN WE RECEIVE WORD A STUDENT HAS TESTED POSITIVE~

1. Class lists, class seating charts, cafeteria seating charts and if necessary bus seating charts are collected to begin the process of contact tracing.

2. Students within 6 feet are identified by Nurse Harrison and escorted to the library. The library is at the front of the building, is closest to the nurses office and provides easy access for parent pick-up. Students are spaced and informed that they are not in trouble but a parent phone call has to be made and a "possible" parent pick-up will be necessary.

3. Parents are notified by Principal Doswell or a member of the admin staff. Translation services are used for families that require translation.

4. If your Panther has been fully vaccinated, and you have documentation of this fact, your child will be returned to class.

5. Students that have not been fully vaccinated are required to be picked up by a parent.

6. The followingCOVID -19 Exposure Letter is provided to EACH parent in English and Spanish.
